“See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”
People who are struggling with any kind of addictive behavior feels very often like they have a sinful unbelieving heart and think God has turned away from them so it is ok for them to turn away from Him. In that place we become hardened by sin’s deceitfulness and we believe a lot of lies. Lies like …
- God no longer loves you.
- God is finished with you.
- You are one of the worst losers of all time.
- You are not a Christian.
- You have fallen from Grace so go ahead and sin.
You know this is true because you … and all of us have felt the same way and heard the same lies. It is simply the enemy of your soul trying to ruin you by dashing your hopes and feeding you … well you know … more vomit. The reality is you are becoming hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Resentment sets in. You begin to blame others for your choices and begin to play the role of victim.
Once the enemy has you in that place you are such an easy target. Either you will just go on wallowing in your self pity and keep acting out … or you will repent and try to prove yourself to God as someone who is good enough for His love. Congratulations … you are now on the road to becoming a Pharisee or a legalist. You are going to double down on your efforts and seek God’s favor by trying to be good. Either way and Satan knows you will lose.
God loves you. God has always loved you. His love began before the creation of the world and will carry you through eternity future. He has chosen you to be an object of His mercy. He was poured into your life the faith and the grace to believe. Your salvation is His work. His Grace is Outrageous … but it is real. His love for you does not waver one millimeter based on your actions. He is with you today and by His indwelling Spirit able to help you walk in purity TODAY!!!
What He wants is your simple resignation to these truths. Bow before Him. Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up. Come before His throne of Grace and find strength and grace to help you today in your time of need.
Our Father is Awesome. Our Savior is Risen. The Spirit is in you.
