His Life – Our Life.5

I know a lot of men who are good men and have been successful in life.  They make good decisions, carefully weigh the pros and cons, seek others advice and have done well.  I also know that many men who on the outside may look successful but eventually they crash and burn.

We read about them in the news.  Whether they are the President of the United States, hold positions of Senator or Congressmen or are the CEO’s of multi-billion dollar companies, or just the guy who lives down the street … something has gotten to them.  They have a secret part of their life where they go to de-stress.  Alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling of any kind of wicked behaviors can be found in the lives of the rich and famous.

It is not necessarily success that causes this to happen.  There are plenty of regular Joes who have the same issues. However, for the Christian man we would hope to see better … but we often do not.  Here is what Romans 6 says about that …

“When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of ? Those things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Often when we are talking to unbelievers and sharing the gospel with them we quote that last verse.  We tell them … “The wages of sin is death …”  Well guess what?  That statement is addressed to believers not unbelievers.  When we choose sin we choose death.

We are saying no to God … the One who loves us and can give us life,  we block Jesus out of our thinking and say,  “Hold on a second, I just want to slip away for a little bit and give myself to sin … back in a minute.”  And we are fooled into thinking that the pleasure sin can give us is better than the life that Jesus gives us.

Bad choices … without immediate negative consequences … become the breeding ground for addiction and ultimate ruin.
