Alibaba, Forrest Gump and You

Jack Ma

Fifteen years ago Jack Ma was a teacher in China earning $20 dollars a month.  In 1995 on a trip to America he got the idea of trying to bring ecommerce to China.  He convinced some people to invest $60,000 and started a company called Alibaba.  Whenever he got discouraged he watched the film Forrest Gump and kept working on his idea.  Yesterday, his company did an Initial Public Offering (IPO) and by the end of the day he was 18 Billion dollars richer.

It is an amazing story about how an idea … a dream … can become a reality that changes your life in a tremendous way.  His dream lead to financial riches.  It will be interesting to see if this changes him for better or worse.  International fame and tremendous financial wealth has ruined a lot of people … but many of us would at least want to see how we could handle that kind of success.

Here is another idea that can change your life.  You have more than Jack Ma can ever earn.  Look at this passage …

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.”  Ephesians 1:3

God has freely given us every spiritual blessing in Christ.  These are blessings, spiritual realities, that are beyond what money can buy.  They are real and priceless.  They are eternal and cannot be stolen.  A Great Depression or sudden Stock Market crash changes nothing.

Yet, many times we are living like spiritual paupers wondering, “God what have you done for me lately?”

I believe one of the keys to experiencing the reality of these spiritual blessing is a heart of gratitude.  Giving thanks for all things is an antidote to the cravings of worldly possession and being an ingrate.  There can be true contentment but it does not come from becoming a billionaire.  It comes from a spirit of thanksgiving expressed in giving to and serving others.

You have the key.  You have every spiritual blessing already in Christ.  Open your mouth and express thanksgiving and see what God will do in your life today.
