The Finished Work of Christ.2

If todays verse is going to make any sense to you there is some biblical truth that you need to understand.  In Christ and in Adam we have two people who serve as representatives for others.  I know it seems weird but that is just the way it is.  Because of that, what happened to them happened to us.

The Bible talks about the entire human race being “in Adam”.  The reality is that what happened to Adam it is as if it happened to us.  The consequences of his choice to eat the forbidden fruit allowed sin and death to enter God’s perfect creation and we call that The Fall.  Not the Fall like aren’t the leaves beautiful this Fall?  But the Fall from the grace of God and a separation between God and the human race.  Sin kills.  Adam and Eve felt shame and covered up their bodies and hid from God in the garden.  Humanity has been covering up and hiding ever since.

So, since you and I were “in Adam” when he fell we fell.  When we were born we were born with a sin nature and separated from God as spiritually dead people.  You might be thinking, “Wait a minute that is not fair.  I wasn’t there so why should Adam’s choice so affect me?”  I don’t know … but that is the way God set it up.  We were in Adam so when Adam fell we fell.  That sucks and that is the bad news.

However, the good news is that just as we were “in Adam” we are also “in Christ”.  You didn’t have a choice in that one either.  However, when Christ died you were in Christ and that is why He is our representative and it is as if what happened to Him happened to us.  The benefits are all ours just as in Adam the consequences are all ours.

So Paul is saying that we need to understand what has happened to us when Christ died on the cross … in Romans 6:8-11 …

“Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”

We have died with Christ and that is why we are no longer slaves to sin.  The lock has been removed and we are free to walk out of our addiction or sexual brokenness and be alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Quit believing the lie that you cannot stop … that you will have to keep sinning sexually.  You do not have to … you have died with Christ and are now alive to God.  You can choose your master each and every day.  Choose the one who can give you life and leave the prison cell behind.

Whew … that was a lot to think about.  I pray you walk in the Spirit today and do not fulfill the desires of the flesh.
