Using Biblical Meditation to Defeat Sexual Temptation.4

It is a powerful experience when God speaks to your heart.  There have been a few yet very distinct times when God has done that to me.  But, isn’t that what we long for?  To experience God in our heart and soul and not just in our knowledge.  He is living and active.  His Spirit dwells within us and He is the God who communicates.

The best and safest way we hear from God is in the Scriptures.  I believe the 66 books of the Bible are inspired and by that, I mean God literally used the people who wrote these words down were not just writing what they wanted but what God wanted.  And, since they have been inspired by God they are then without error.

So we can trust our Bibles and the words are God’s words to us.  However, that is not the only way He communicates.  Another avenue is through the creation.  Consider these two passages.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”  Romans 1:18-20

Also;

            The heavens are telling of the glory of God;

     And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.

Day to day pours forth speech,

     And night to night reveals knowledge.

There is no speech, nor are there words;

     Their voice is not heard.

Their line has gone out through all the earth,

     And their utterances to the end of the world.

He speaks to us through the Bible and He speaks to us through the Creation.  However, He can also speak to us in our hearts and it is normally through meditating on His Word.  I have found that when I am struggling with whatever I am facing I can meditate on a passage of Scripture and hear Him speaking to me.

Here is another example from James 1 that all of us can use when we are facing difficulties that seem to be overwhelming.  James 1:2-4 says …

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

I cannot tell you how many times meditating on this passage has helped me through many a storm.  Bad news hits and my initial reaction used to be panic.  I tend to take what is happening and thinking it through to the worst case that it could possibly lead to. Then my fear and anxiety kick in and depression follows right behind it.

Till I sit down, close my eyes and walk though that passage again in my mind praying as I go.  I am told to be joyful.  I am told to consider it to be the best of news, not because of what is happening but that God is going to use what is happening to test my faith.  I rejoice that He is testing my faith and can even express that.  Not because of the painful things that are happening but because of what the testing of my faith is going to produce.

Trials, when accepted in this way, strengthens our faith and then God gives us an amazing promise.  It will produce endurance.  It will produce strength.  And then it tells me if I rejoice in that I will become more mature and complete lacking in nothing.

Do you know any believers like that?  They are usually elderly and have gone through a tremendous amount of suffering.  But they are deep waters.  They are quiet and strong and nothing seems to scare them.  I hope I am becoming one of them.

Try meditating on that passage.  Memorize it so that it is in your heart and then pray through it slowly and listen.  God may speak something clear and undeniable to your soul.
