Preparing for Battle
For many of you, American College Football is no big deal. However, if you live in Columbus Ohio and you are playing the # 2 team in the nation with the hopes of being in the National Championship Playoffs, it is a HUGE deal.
Now, don’t you think that they have been preparing for the game with more adrenalin than if they were playing the Sisters of Holy Grace Convent, or some of the weaker teams in the nation? I guarantee you that they are entering the game razor sharp and prepared for battle.
Another example of someone preparing for battle would be the soldiers who are in a real life or death battle. Those who are aligned against an enemy where the battle lines are clear and attack is imminent. Even better would be how much fighting is done now where the battle lines are not clear, and the enemy is using guerrilla warfare. You are not sure where he is nor when he may attack. In that case, you must be ever diligent and always prepared.
Such is the battle that you and I are in every day. Paul says this in Ephesians 6:10-12,
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
And Peter writes in 1 Peter 5:8,
“Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
Do you get the idea that if you are a follower of Jesus, you are in a battle? And there are no battle lines or established ways for the battle to be fought. We are out maned, out gunned, and behind enemy lines. This is real for every one of us, and if we are not prepared for the battle and remaining alert, it is no wonder we are getting slaughtered on a regular basis.
The enemy has an inside and outside advantage. We live in the world God is allowing our enemy to run. We have a sin nature inside of our bodies, and there are literally spiritual forces of darkness that want to defeat us. Plus, we live in a fallen world.
However, God has given us two major things so that we can not only survive but be victorious. He is living inside of our bodies, and He has given us community. The Spirit in us is a given. He is not only in us but He is All In for us. It is the community part that breaks down because we are ashamed.
Ashamed or not the battle is still there every day. This next week we are going to look carefully at this battle and what we must do to not only engage in it every day but even more so, win it daily. Just remember this from 1 John 4:4,
“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
