Why Can I Not Get Untangled?
Yesterday we looked at a passage where the disciples of Jesus could not cast out a demon from a boy whose father had brought him to be healed. This happened after Jesus had given them power and His authority to cast out demons. But in this instance, they failed.
Jesus, along with Peter, James, and John return from them seeing Jesus transfigured and the desperate father pleads with Jesus to cast the demon out. Jesus says that anything is possible to those who believe and the man cries out;
“I do believe, help me with my unbelief!”
At that moment Jesus says;
“You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.”
When the disciples asked why they had not been able to cast the demon out when just recently they had been able to do so, Jesus revealed why this was different. He simply said;
“This kind can come out only by prayer.”
How many times have you asked God to heal you from your sexual brokenness? How many promises have you made and broken in your battle to stop using sex and porn? And, yet, you find yourself back at it perhaps even hours or days after. Is it possible that there is something that is holding you back from freedom?
Sex is the sin that so easily entangles and not so quickly releases its grip. It can be a powerful addiction that will not go away until you take the steps you need to take to be set free. We are all going to experience sexual temptation while we are here on the earth. However, we can experience freedom from enslavement to sexual sin.
If you are still living in isolation, do not expect emancipation. If you are keeping this shameful sin a secret, then it will always have power over you. If you are telling yourself, as I told myself, for 8+ years; “I can beat this because I know the Bible so well and I am strong enough to do this.” Then you will never escape the iron chains that bind you.
I needed not only the help God could give me, but I needed a community of other believers to stand with me and pray. I needed to confess my sins to my wife and my adult children. I needed to daily be walking filled with the Spirit with the full armor of God protecting me. And yet I know some who are doing all these things and still seems to be stuck.
Is it possible that there may be demons influencing your behavior? Could the evil one have found a foothold or built a stronghold in your life that will need to be exposed, rebuked and torn down before you see the freedom that comes from living the normal Christian life? Yes, it is certainly possible.
For four years in Annapolis Maryland, my family owned an Alberg 30 sailboat.
On Wednesday nights, the Yacht Club would host races. We would sail out of the Severn River into the Chesapeake Bay and back. It was very competitive with most of the boats being owned by crusty retired naval officers feeling the need to beat the other guy. But there is one thing I can promise you was correct. NEVER, would the captain allow the anchor to be down while trying to sail.
Is something working as an anchor to keep you in sexual sin? More tomorrow.
