When Jesus Confronted Hyprocrisy
There were no people whom Jesus ever addressed as harshly as the Pharisees. These men were supposed to be the religious leaders of the nation of Israel. They were to be men who knew the Law, The Torah and specialized in helping God’s people follow His commandments. However, somewhere along the line, they lost a sense of who they were supposed to be and legalism became perfected under them.
They found a way to turn the 10 Commandments in 613 laws. Which is what happens when rules are made by committee instead of coming from God. These laws became a significant burden on the Jews because they felt the full weight of guilt and fear. Legalism appeals to the thought that I can gain God’s acceptance through my efforts of obedience. Plus, what ticked Jesus off was that what they demanded of others they did not do themselves.
In Matthew 23 Jesus unleashed one of the greatest rants against the Pharisees and their hypocrisy. Jesus tells them eight times that they should be very afraid because of what they were doing. And in seven of those eight woes, He calls them HYPOCRITES. I especially like this one;
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.”
I guess that one speaks to me because that is what I was. I could dress up in my suit on Sunday to preach and shepherd the flock all the while being addicted to porn. Whitewashed on the outside with the white being 1 micron deep. (1 micron = 1 millionth of a meter thick). While on the insides there is nothing but dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.
Jesus says to them; “I see through you. I know the real you and what is insides is nothing but filth and decay.” A far cry from what He wants to do in us which is to transform us into being like Him.
However, if you are in Christ, then Christ is in you. You are not full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. You are a new creation in Christ. God has given you a new heart by replacing the heart of stone with a heart of flesh. He has given us the mind of Christ, placed His Spirit within our bodies and wants to continue to transform us into becoming men who act like Jesus.
We need to stop viewing ourselves as we were before Christ. Stop allowing our weaknesses and sin to define us. Be filled with the Spirit and walk in the Spirit and let His transforming power to continue the work that HE WANTS TO DO!
All our sins have been thoroughly washed away by the blood of Christ, and He desires to give you the power to walk in purity today. But we need to take off the mask and be real and truthful to a team of men who will help us along the way. Please, end the isolation and walk with me in the light.
