Escaping the Slavery of Sexual Brokenness.2
God has proven that He will intervene and fight for His people. Egypt was the most powerful nation in the world at the time of Moses. God had Moses ask politely if they could leave to go worship God and Pharaoh said no way. This began a tug-of-war between Pharaoh and God and nobody wins a tug-of-war against an omnipotent opponent.
So, ten plagues were unleashed against Egypt which some estimate took 4-5 months. The result was a nation completely destroyed and offering their gold, jewels, and clothing to leave them. God did exactly what He knew was needed to free His people. This is one of many stories in the Bible where God fights for His people even when they are not that into obeying God.
The same is true for us. God, in one decisive move, defeated sin and death on the cross. It took the death of His Son to purchase our freedom from the penalty of our sins and to give us access to freedom from sexual sin.
Now, listen carefully, you know that God is ALL IN for you and for us to experience the freedom from sexual sin we must fight for it as well. Romans 6 tells us that daily, we choose our master;
“Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”
This is something we must do every day. This is part of us winning the battle against lust and our slavery to sexual sin. Just as the Jews did not get to the Promised Land so also we will not find freedom from sexual sin if we are not willing to battle daily against our enemies of the world, the flesh, and the devil without fighting for it. And we must fight for it every day.
Israel had some incredible obstacles to reach the Promised Land. There was a sea they had to pass through, a desert they had to endure, enemies along the way to had to face, a fortified city they had to destroy and inhabitants in the land they had to defeat.
There is a Promise Land for us to reach as well. A place of freedom from sexual sin. A land flowing with milk and honey. A place where you have nothing to hide and nothing to be ashamed about. A place where you can be daily filled with the Spirit and feel at peace with God. A place where because of your obedience God will reward you with deep and pure relationships with others and the death of self-loathing.
Tomorrow we will learn about the sea we must pass through. However, today can you stop and pray something like this;
“Father in Heaven, thank you that you are fighting for me. Thank you, Jesus, for your death and resurrection so that I can be free from sexual sin. Thank you, Holy Spirit that you dwell in me and I ask you to fill me and empower me to walk in the Spirit. And Lord, help me to reach out to others who can give me support when temptation comes and to find the way of escape that you promised in your Word.”
