The primary reason we fall back into sexual sin is because we have become addicted to the chemicals released in our brain when we start to become sexually excited. That is a real and physical reaction to sexual stimulation. However, before that even begins to happen something else is going on inside of us. That something else is the reality that inside of us is something called our “flesh” or our “sin nature.”
It has this amazing ability to always want more. It wants more frequency and more variety. I can remember when I was just a kid and found my dad’s stash of porn. What I saw was so much more than I had ever seen before. It was extremely exciting but that initial thrill soon was not enough so I craved next month’s issue to come out.
Our flesh is a beast never satiated. Which is one reason someone can go from just looking at a little porn and acting out to watching hours of porn and acting out multiple times in the same session. It is that part of us that loves selfishness and rebellion. It wants to take and not give. Like Paul writes in Romans 7:15-19
“For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. … For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not.”
We are told there are two things we need to do so that we are not allowing our flesh to control our actions. First, we are to mortify the flesh. That means put it to death. Kill it!!! But how do I do that? It is not like I can cut it off and throw it away. However, what I can do is find the things in my life that the flesh uses to cause me to sin and get rid of them. If I have a stash of porn in any form get rid of it or delete it. If there is an inappropriate relationship, end it. Use filters and reporting software to block and report to others all internet use.
The second thing is even more important and is how a long and sustained recovery happens and that is being filled with and walking in the power of the Holy Spirit.
