He is Your Good Good Father – Blog
I can remember the first time I read Psalm 139. I was a new Christian and was sitting in my car in a parking lot in Washington DC. One assignment you were asked to do was to read this Psalm. It had me in tears by the end to realize what this song teaches us about our Good Father. I had no idea to what extent God the Father knew me and loved me.
It starts by telling us the reality of Him knowing all things … even all things about us.
O Lord, You have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
You understand my thought from afar.
You scrutinize my path and my lying down,
And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, O Lord, You know it all.
You have enclosed me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is too high, I cannot attain to it.
He has carefully studied who we are and has known what we would think, do and say during our entire lifetime before He even created the universe. You see God did not just spin this universe into existence and then gone off to do other things, letting everything it just happen willy-nilly. He has been, is now and always will be observing, listening and understanding everything in our lives every day.
He watched me when I got up at 7:30 am and listened as I went through my morning prayers. He knew that I was upset last night when I went to bed and we talked about that this morning. He scrutinizes everything we do not like some detective waiting to catch us doing something wrong but more like I love to watch my grandchildren doing almost anything.
He is intimately acquainted with everything thing I do and even every word I think before it unwisely jumps out of my mouth. Plus, not only is He hearing every word I say and knowing every thought I think he “enclosed me behind and before.” In other words like David writes in Psalm 3:3;
“But you, LORD, are a shield around me,
my glory, the One who lifts my head high.”
Plus, His hand rests upon us, or like we do when walking with our grandkids we are holding hands. Imagine that, as you are going through your day you are walking along holding hands with God – Your Good Good Father.
Finally, David cries out that knowing all these things
- His Father searches and knows him.
- His Father knows when he sits down and when he rises up
- His Father knows what he is thinking and where he is going
- His Father knows every word he thinks and every word he says
- His Father is a shield around him and is holding his hand
… frankly, all this blows his mind!!!
If you are feeling distant from your Father that is only an illusion. It is a lie coming from our enemy and a guilty conscience. It seems logical that because of our continuing sexual sin that God has abandoned us. He has not. He will not … ever. Remember, before creation even existed He chose you and adopted you to be one of His children … knowing everything you would think, do, and say.
He has not sent you to the blackboard to write 1000 times “I will not commit sexual sin.” Instead, He lives inside of you by the indwelling Holy Spirit and is ready to help you get through today. And He will if you ask the Spirit to fill you. And if you walk filled with the Spirit you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Also, stay connected to your support community today.
