I remember the time when my older brother and his friends tried to “ditch” me. I was the dumb little brother, and he did not want me hanging around with him so they outran me in the neighborhood and I was left alone. So, I took a can of fire engine red spray paint and sprayed on his bedroom wall “You Are a Loser.” Just kidding but that was what I wanted to do.
When we are being drawn into sexual sin with the temptation of seeing something or having a sexual thought or memory we want to ditch God. It is incredible to me how we can compartmentalize and imagine we are alone.
Here is our REALITY … WE ARE NEVER ALONE. David makes a big deal about this in Psalm 139;
“Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the dawn,
If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
Even there Your hand will lead me,
And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me,
And the light around me will be night,”
Even the darkness is not dark to You,
And the night is as bright as the day.
Darkness and light are alike to You.”
Despite knowing this reality are you playing hide and seek with God? Are you imagining He is not aware of where you are and what you are doing? I loved playing Hide and Seek as a kid. One time I got inside a wooden box and had a friend nail the box shut so they would not find me. You might laugh at that but do you think shutting and locking the door keeps God out?
You might even go into an adult bookstore, by the way using the word adult gives it the image that it is for people who are older and more mature, but it really ought to be called “Stupid Adult Book Store.” Inside it is dark, and the men in there have their heads down not wanting to be recognized. When all along if they are believers the Spirit inside of them is being grieved. You are looking at garbage but your brain is lighting up like a Christmas tree, and you think what you are seeing is great … but it is not … it is just garbage.
This psalm is saying there is nowhere you can go to hide from God. He is everywhere in two ways. God is omnipresent which simply means He able to be present in any part of the universe at any time. Also, because the Spirit of God lives inside of you, He is with you always. As a believer, the Spirit of God dwells inside of our bodies. In fact, we are told that they are not even our own bodies. We read in 1 Corinthians 6:18-20;
“Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore, glorify God in your body.”
So, stop imagining that you are alone. Your Good Good Father is always with you by His Spirit and He is there to help you. He is there to warn you that what you are doing is not good and if asked He can give you the strength to say no to temptation. You just need to practice these two things when you are being tempted.
