Critical Recovery Lesson # 4 from a Former Sex Addict – blog

 In Daily Encouragement

 Do you realize that part of the battle we have to fight is spiritual in nature?  Paul tells us in Ephesians 6 that we do not do battle against flesh and blood but against the principalities and power of darkness.  Here is what he writes on it;

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devilFor our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Jesus said that satan is the father of lies and when he is speaking he is lying because he is the father of lies.  Peter writes;

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

Today you might be on the menu.  He uses our flesh and the sexual desires that God gave us for our good to be experienced in a marriage.  Sexual intimacy is a gift from God for husbands and wives to enjoy and it actually can bond the two together to help protect us from seeking sexual sin outside of marriage.

However, whether you are married or not, this is a very important area in which we face temptation on a daily basis.

Critical Recovery Lesson # 4 from a Former Sex Addict – Daily Put on the Full Armor of God.

Pretending in our mind that this enemy is not around today and so we can relax is the thinking of a fool.  We need to be alert and keep our mind sober which means to think seriously about this reality that is not easy to see or detect.  Therefore, God tells us how to stand strong against this spiritual reality by using the armor of the common Roman Soldier and the equipment he had to use in the battle.

Each piece of equipment is a metaphor for something we need to be doing.  The equipment is there for our protection and to have the ability to fight this enemy who will come at us at the least expected moments.  Here they are and how to use them.

The Belt of Truth – we need to know the truth and we need to speak the truth.  By telling the truth we are able to stand strong instead of cowering behind the darkness of lies and the secret shame lying brings with it.

The Breastplate of Righteousness – we need to understand that Jesus has given to us His righteousness and we need to continue through the day to make righteous, or the right decisions.  I call that doing the next RIGHT thing.  Saying out loud to temptation “NO” and then heading in the other direction is how we keep this armor on.  Remember we are to “Flee youthful lusts!!!”

The Shoes of the Gospel – we need to take a stand for Christ.  When associating with non-believers we need to simply try and do what Jesus would do when He was in the presence of unbelievers.  Not being some obnoxious religious fanatic but with kind words let your faith be seen and heard.

The Shield of Faith – we need to believe what God has said and use that truth to defeat the arrows of fear and doubt that satan is shooting into our heart and mind.  I find this is done best by prayers of thanksgiving to God that He is in control and is able to defend us.

The Sword of the Spirit – we need to be reading and meditating on Scripture.  Use the Word of God to repel the lies of the enemy and of the world.  A young man, or any person for that matter, needs to learn the word of God and use it against these demonic attacks.

The Helmut of our Salvation – we must know and understand that we have been saved by the grace of God and that His love for us is unconditional.  We are His children and He will never forsake or abandon us.

Paul also tells us three more things that most people do not include in this list.  He says we need to be alert, pray at all times in the Spirit and pray for all the saints.
