This Ain’t No Cracker Jack Prize Inside!!!
Remember Cracker Jacks? The first time you see the box and read that there is not only delicious caramel coated popcorn and peanuts in there but there was a “Prize Inside.” I think that only excited me when I had my first box around 1958. The food inside was tasty, but the prizes sucked. Just some molded tiny piece of plastic instead of a cool yo-yo or a Chinese finger trap.
Nothing compares to the prize that God has put inside of you. Every Christian has received a gift from God the Father at the moment they believe in Jesus and trust in Him and His death as payment for their sins.
We have been talking about how futile it is in the Christian life to take the Path of Least Resistance. Trying to live the Christian life in this screwed up world by doing the bare minimum. Things like keeping your Bible next to your bed so that you will at least think about reading it. Having a prayer life by saying “Rub-a-Dub-Dub, thanks for the Grub before eating and dropping a dollar bill in the offering plate on that rare Sunday where you feel guilty enough to go to church.
Too many Christians are living life in what I call “Coast Mode.” Just coasting along in neutral hoping nothing bad happens and serving other gods. Like the god of porn and sex. Bowing at the altar on a regular basis to get your cheap little orgasmic pleasure before beginning or ending your day.
I have stressed that we are at war and the path of least resistance leaves us so vulnerable to the enemy of our souls. To counterbalance the reality of our daily battle we need to take account of what resources we have to be able to not only fight this battle but even, eventually, find the freedom that we can have in Christ.
Yesterday, we looked at the fact that now, in Christ, we are a New Creation.
Today, our second and most important resource is the “Prize Inside” that God has given us. We read this in Ephesians 1:13 that when we believed in Christ, we were all “sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise.”
Paul says it this way in 1 Corinthians 6:19 where we read;
“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?”
And because God has purchased us … and therefore owns our bodies … and has placed His Spirit inside of us to help us in this battle, we read this;
“So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
We will look more carefully at the whole putting to death the deeds of the body tomorrow. However, today think about this incredible and most amazing truth. God the Holy Spirit lives inside of you. He is there and is probably the most untapped resource in the history of the world.
Do you want to know why you have not been able to stop your sexual addiction? Why despite all the promises and cries of desperation you have made you keep going back to sexual sin? It is because in that moment of temptation your desires have so trained you that you reach for the sin instead of yielding to the Spirit.
This addictive behavior has become so ingrained in your mind and body that you go on automatic pilot and go down in flames. You do not even think of the consequences or the fact that living according to your flesh will bring death and discipline. Death to your joy and peace. Death to your relationships. Death to your marriage and maybe eventually death to you.
All the while the Holy Spirit of God is in you waiting for you to yield your body to Him. To allow Him to lead you to the escape that He always has available for you. He is there making sure that you are not being tempted beyond what you can resist and if at that moment or even before you are being filled with and walking in the Holy Spirit you can flee youthful lusts and not fall … again … and again … and again.
Ask the Spirit right now to fill you and keep asking Him throughout your day today. You are at war … but He will win the battle for you if you are filled with and yielding to Him.
