Lie # 5 “There is No Longer Any Offering for Your Sins” – blog

 In Daily Encouragement

I interrupted a series I was writing on Lies to focus on other things during the Christmas Season.  I want to finish it with three more because I think is a good series based on the feedback I was getting.  Yesterday, well that was just me being weird and trying to use humor.  Sorry if that was confusing for some of you.

Here are the 4 Lies we have looked at so far.

  1. The Lie of “One Last Time!”

  2. Lie # 2 – “I Will Never Be Able to Stop!”

  3. Lie # 3 – “And You Call Yourself a Christian?”

  4. Lie # 4 – “God Does Not Love You Anymore!”

I cannot begin to imagine how many times the accuser of all Believers has used that verse to slip a lie into our thinking.  I mean on the surface it seems so simple and hard to misinterpret what the author is saying;

“For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries.”

Now, this is not and cannot be a black and white thing.  I do not believe that has ever been a Christian who did not sin willfully after being born again.  I know there are hellfire and brimstone pastors who will beat you over the head with this verse.  Sorry for the stereotype but if he does and he is obviously overweight, shake his hand after the service and ask him how that gluttony thing is going and what time is he planning on going to the Hometown Buffet!

I would also say that almost all of the time I sin it has been sinning willfully.  Then the writer drops this bombshell on us that if and when that is the case “THERE NO LONGER REMAINS A SACRIFICE FOR SINS.”  The father of lies, satan, uses this as a cattle prod moving us down the pathway of shame and despair.  If there no longer remains a sacrifice for my sins then I will have sins that are not paid for and I will go to hell when I die.

So, let me just ask you a question.  Does that sound like the gospel to you?  Has the author completely forgotten about the Mercy and Grace of God?  Do you really want to know why he makes this statement?  Because in the first 25 verses of Chapter 10 and in all of Chapter 9 he has been teaching us that there can be only one true sacrifice the sins of the world.  Jesus gave his life as the only sinless man to be that sacrifice for all of our sins.

Please notice two earlier statements in Hebrews 10;

Verses 11-14;

“Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet. For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.”

The writer’s whole point in Chapters 9 and 10 is that because the sacrifice that Christ made was all-sufficient for all the sins of all the world there can be no other sacrifice made because His sacrifice; has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.

Whether you are battling with some kind of sin or not, and oh by the way that latter group is known in statistics as the “null set.”  Because there is nobody in that group.  All have sinned and fallen short of the image of God. And living the Christian life while still trying to cling to some sins we have come to savor, is going to cause you to fear God’s judgment on your life and that is a sad way to live.

Verses 16-18;

“This is the covenant that I will make with them

After those days, says the Lord:

I will put My laws upon their heart,

And on their mind, I will write them,”

He then says,

 And their sins and their lawless deeds

I will remember no more.”

Now where there is forgiveness of these things,

there is no longer any offering for sin.

The reason there is no longer any offering for sin is because our offerings are worthless.  All of our sins are already paid for and God’s punishment for all of your sins has already been placed on Jesus and He alone has paid the price.  Sure, you can try and bargain with God and make promises out the wazoo.  But they are worthless because your debt has already been paid in full.

Do you ever go back to the store after buying something and ask if you can pay for it again?  Of course not.  You paid for it once.  And there is no longer any other payment that needs to be made.

Rejoice, my friends.  There is no unfinished business when it comes to paying for all of your sins.  Jesus has been there and done that and literally has the scars to prove it. Nothing more needs to happen or even can happen in order to gain and keep your forgiveness.
