Fighting or Failing the Good Fight? blog
In writing to his disciple Timothy, who was pastoring the church Paul started in Ephesus, he tells him to;
“Fight the good fight of faith…” (1 Timothy 6:12)
This is one of many times we read about our being in a battle against the forces of evil that are around us. Paul literally says this in his letter to the church in Ephesus where he writes;
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
I don’t know about you but to me, that list is pretty impressive and threatening at the same time. Paul lists 4 levels of demonic authority and shouts at us saying; “Wake up, numbskull, you are in a battle way over your head.”
Then, Paul lists what we call the “full armor of God” and tells us we need to be putting it on every day.
Most of the Christians I know do not like to do daily things to help them in this battle. I literally get people emailing me almost daily asking and pleading for help. At some point, everyone hits rock bottom and they become desperate because they have lost everything to this addiction or are about to.
Desperate people are good at crying out for help, which is what we are supposed to do. What they are not good at doing is taking the actions needed to change their situation and begin to walk out of their addiction. Thoughts like …
- It’s too hard.
- I’m not seeing any results and I have been trying for at least 3 days!!!
- I am all alone and there is nobody I can tell.
The three “A’holes” are all in play. Alone, Afraid and Ashamed have become our only friends and they are whispering lies into our minds with but one purpose in mind.
To Keep You in Isolation
Because as long as you are in isolation you will not have what you truly need the most. Sure, you have your Bible, and someone is always telling you that you need to read your Bible MORE. You have prayer and that is another area in which you are a failure. You have church and you may even be going there but nobody knows the real you and how addicted you have become to sexual sin.
So, you put on the mask of your Christian smiley face, sit through worship, listen to a sermon, and drop some loose change into the offering plate and call it a day. But it all feels like you are just going through the motions … that is because you are … just going through the motions.
Now imagine yourself being in that condition and being the Senior Pastor!!! That was me for over eight years. Thank God those days are over.
There is only one way to “Fight the Good Fight” in such a way that you do not continue to lose. I mean you are sick of it, right? The same routine, the same promises, the same temptations becoming stronger, the same falls, guilt, fear, and shame. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
Until you finally scream out;
“What do I need to do to STOP?”
I will tell you, but you will not like it. In fact, you will hate it. So, maybe I shouldn’t tell you, right? No? Do you want to know? Ok, I’ll tell you but do not say I didn’t warn you. Here it is;
STOP THE ISOLATION
See, the problem is that you are not some poor pathetic loser who cannot stop looking at porn. You are not some weak despicable pervert who is surely on your way to HELL.
You are a Lone Sheep. You are dead meat waiting to happen. You can muster all the strength you can possibly have in you, but it will never be enough. Even having the Holy Spirit of God inside of you has not been enough. Seems like it should be. I have the Spirit. I have the Bible. But I keep getting massacred.
So, let me ask you a question. How many soldiers stormed the beaches of France on D-Day? Realizing that “The Terminator” is a fictional character and you are not the Terminator.
And they were only up against the Nazi Army. You, however, are up …
“… against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
And they are going to kick your butt every time.
