The Faith of a Harlot – blog
The first woman in Hebrews 11 who is praised for her faith is Rahab. She was the harlot in Jericho who hid the 2 spies who were sent to scout out the land before the Hebrews would attempt to make a move into the Promised Land. They left from Shittim which sounds like a place I used to spend time in and snuck into Jericho.
Now, I am not going to question why these two spies ended up at a harlot’s residence. After surviving 40 years in the desert and watching the entire generation who failed to enter the land die, just being in a city must have been an overwhelming experience for them.
Here are some things we know about Rahab from Joshua 2. Her home and I am assuming the place of her business, was on the wall that was the pride of Jericho. They built the wall and a mighty wall it was. They figured because of the wall they would never be conquered. We also know she had a family. She mentions in Joshua 2 that she had a mother, father, sisters, and brothers.
Somehow, she believed that God was going to give Israel not only the city of Jericho but the rest of the Promised Land as well. How could she know this? She was someone that God chose to use and really became the key person opening the door to the Promised Land. God selected her in spite of who she was and what she did to play this critical role in the history of the Hebrews.
But not only that … she also was used by God to be part of the lineage of Jesus. She was the mother of Boaz. Rahab had Boaz who married Ruth and gave birth to Jesse who was the father of David. Did you follow that??? King David of Israel was the great, great grandson of Rahab whose lineage is linked directly to Jesus.
What seems significant to me is that God does not choose people because of what they did or did not do in life. In this list in Matthew 1, we find a mother who was a harlot in Jericho. God used her in spite of the work she did and might even have been forced into for the sake of her family.
God, our Father has this incredible heart of Grace and can use anyone anywhere and at any time. We believe lies that are whispered into our minds by the father of lies, that He is not going to use us. That our sexual sin has booted us out of God’s family, and we have to wallow in our sexual brokenness for the rest of our lives.
That is not true. It is not true of me for He has rescued me from my sexual addiction and is using me to speak into your life today. His love for us is eternal and there is absolutely nothing that can separate us from the love of God.
I don’t care what you have done in the past … the blood of Christ covers it. No matter how dark and sex stained your life might be … the crucifixion of Christ pays for it. No matter how far you have fallen or how far you have fled … the open arms of the Father welcome you home because you are one of his daughters or sons and He forgives all of our sins.
Listen carefully to these words in Hebrews 10:14;
“For by one offering
He has perfected for all time
those who are sanctified.”
That one offering was Jesus dying on the cross. He has granted to you His righteousness and forgiven all of your sins – past, present, and future. He has perfected you for all time and His forgiveness extends forever. Even though for now, today … His Spirit is inside of your body to help you become more like Jesus.
Do you have the faith to believe that? God the Son gave up everything to make you one of His children and He will never, ever, let you go!!!
