Is Jesus The Bread of Your Life? ~ blog

 In Daily Encouragement

After the whole walking on the water event, Jesus and his disciples landed on the other side of the Sea of Galilee.  It did not take long for those who wanted to see and hear Jesus to find him, so it was not unusual for Him to draw a crowd.  People had been healed by just touching his cloak.  Plus, the whole feeding of the 5000-news spread, and the rumor of free food is always a strong motivator.

One thing I notice about Jesus is He was not into idle chit-chat.  Every opportunity was used to teach people important truths about himself.  He encourages the crowd to believe in Him and they will discover food which endures to eternal life.  So, they ask for a sign from Him and ask what they needed to do in order to be doing the works of God.

This leads to a discussion about Moses and the manna the Israelites received from God. To which Jesus replies;

“I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger,

and he who believes in Me will never thirst.”

Now many were scratching their heads about this idea that Jesus is the bread of life. Their thoughts become even more challenging when Jesus says;

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

Now they are really confused and focus on the idea that Jesus is telling them that they would need to eat his flesh.  So, Jesus makes an even stronger statement;

“Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

After this bold and very confusing statement, we are told that many of those who had been following Him turned around and left.  They probably thought this guy is crazy, talking about them eating His flesh and drinking His blood.

So, Jesus asks his 12 disciples if they are going to leave Him as well. To which Peter replies;

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”

So, why am I going into the details of this rather obscure passage of Scripture?  It is because sometimes those who are trying to live the Christian life and yet have become addicted to porn and sex really wonder if perhaps, they are truly saved or not.  Our hearts are longing for freedom from sin but our good intentions seldom to bring any lasting results.

There are often feelings of defeat and failure.  We feel shame and guilt and it’s like God is a million miles away from us. I believe it is a matter of what we are consuming.  What has become our daily bread?  We have appetites that have gotten out of control and we want the sugar rush that porn and sex deliver.  However, it always leaves us wanting more. It is not the bread of life.  It is the bread of death.

While we are consuming it … it is consuming us.  Instead of us being fed with the bread of life we are eating the bread of death.  Instead of offering our bodies to God as living sacrifices every day, asking for the filling of the Spirit, and walking in the Spirit so that we do not fulfill the desires of our flesh … we are using porn and sex as a stress reliever.  It always helps momentarily … but also always leaves us only wanting more.

Jesus is the bread of life.  It is from Him and through His Spirit that our deepest and most important needs can be truly fulfilled. He is the source of all spiritual life and health.  He can not only be filling us and satisfying our greatest needs, but He can also be healing us of our diseases and solving our problems.

However, it is rarely a waving of the magic wand type of thing.  It is living out our faith and coming to Him as the bread of life to give us life for each day.  It is seeing each day as a gift from Him in which He has a will for you that is good.  It is realizing that we are His workmanship and He has saved us by Grace and has works for us to do.

And until we live this way … offering our bodies to Him every day as living sacrifices, surrendering to His will for our life, feeding our souls on Him and His word, communicating with Him throughout the day, and walking filled with His Spirit … then we can be experiencing His life in us and start to walk away from porn and sexual sin.

Living the real Christian life and experiencing God transforming us by His Spirit takes a day by day commitment to feeding ourselves with the Bread of Life and allowing Him to change us.  He calls us to a life of purity, and He will take us there … if our life each day is surrendered to Him.

I hope that this day you have surrendered your body to Him as a living sacrifice, have asked for the filling of the Spirit, are walking in the Spirit and have put on the full armor of God.
