What is The Armor of Light? ~ blog

I am the kind of guy who likes to get things done quickly and efficiently.  For example, if I am carrying stuff from my car into the house, I will do almost anything possible to do it all in one trip.  I don’t care how many bags of groceries my wife brings home I only want to make one trip the 15 feet from her car into the kitchen.

Like doing it in two trips is going to kill me right?

Actually, for me, it is some kind of challenge.  Now let’s say she parked on the street because of another unfinished project I have set up in the garage.  I have every bag in my two hands and maybe holding one with my teeth … and I notice a bag filled with $100-dollar bills is in the middle of the street.  Plus, a group of teenage boys is getting closer and soon they will also see the bag.  What do you think I would do?

Without a doubt, I would set the groceries down and pick up the money.  To heck with my world record attempt at maximum grocery bags to ever be carried.  I would set down what has little value so that I could pick up what is more valuable.  And I bet you would too.

Yesterday we saw in Romans 13 a different type of armor that Paul mentions.  He is admonishing his readers on some of the practical things they need to be doing because they believed Jesus was going to show up and take them home very soon.  In this passage, he is going to tell them there is something they need to pick up and put on as well as things they needed to set down stop doing.

“The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore, let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.  Let us behave properly as in the day,”

Notice he tells them there are things they need to put down or lay aside so that they can put on the Armor of Light. We know about these deeds of darkness.  Darkness represents those times when we are doing things in secret.  Paul writes in Ephesians 5:11;

“Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness,

but rather expose them.”

 The Apostle John wrote in John 3:19;

This is the verdict: Light has come into the world,

but people loved darkness instead of light

because their deeds were evil.

The lights around us might be on but we are going into darkness to find sexual sin.  Sunday on the radio I was listening to NPR and a guy was talking about the Dark Web. You mean there is a place on the web that is darker than the darkness anyone can find on the regular old internet? People are loving the darkness more than the light especially online.

So, Paul is telling his readers and God is telling us through him that we need to lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the Armor of Light.

So, what is the Armor of Light?

The Armor of Light is simply knowing and telling the truth about yourself.  It is leaving the things of sin and shame we do in the darkness and isolation and telling the truth about who we are and where we have been and what we have done.  It is being the same person you are in public that you are when you are alone.  It is realizing that with God there is no darkness, and nothing is hidden from Him and living in private the person you appear to be in public.

One person said it this way …

Be the person your dog thinks you are.

We pretend we can indulge ourselves and our flesh by using porn and sexual sin just a little bit and it will not be all that bad.  When in reality it is not possible to be feeding our flesh with sexual thought, images, videos, and actions and at the same time be being filled with and walking in the Spirit. You cannot go East and West at the same time.

It is impossible to be growing closer to God and becoming a more Christ-like person and be continuing to commit sexual sin.  And for years I fooled myself into thinking that was not true. You cannot be standing in the middle of the USA and be heading to the East Coast and the West Coast at the same time.

Back and forth … Back and forth … Back and forth.  Pleading with God for forgiveness and deliverance one day and back into porn and sexual sin the next.  You have done it for so long that you are now in this rut of darkness when you think you can keep your secret life a secret.

Do you want to put on the Armor of Light?  It begins with telling the truth to God and yourself.  Then find a place where you can continue to tell the truth to others who know where you are and how horrible it really is … and are ready to help you with weekly accountability and daily support.

We do this in our 180 Online Support Teams where we are putting on the Armor of Light every day with one another, are praying for one another, and seeing God begin to bring healing to our lives.
