Renewing the Brakes in Your Brain ~ blog
So, let’s put this thinking into context. There is in the prefrontal cortex of our head, located right behind our forehead we have the capacity to think, reason, use wisdom and apply knowledge to the decisions we are going to make today.
The adults and teens make decisions using different parts of the brain. Our prefrontal cortex is not fully formed until as we are 25 years old. Adults make decisions using our frontal lobes and most of the time those decisions are good ones. Teens respond to stimuli not with reason and wisdom because their frontal lobes are not yet fully formed. They think with their amygdala which is more the emotional center of their minds.

As adults, and more specifically Christian adults we know the harm and pain addiction to sex and porn does to us, our spouse, our family, and our friends. The problem is the vast majority of us were exposed to porn even before we were teens. So, we liked it because it made us feel good for a time and was a great escape from the trauma of another huge pimple in the middle of our forehead.
Our amygdala likes it when we are becoming sexually aroused and the chemicals being released in our brains cause us to feel good, gives us energy, and is wildly entertaining. So, we begin at an early age to use porn to help ourselves feel better and escape the pain of life.
This explains why a happily married man, with a good job, a great reputation, a strong family will risk it all using porn, massage parlors, and even prostitutes to get their “fix.” It makes no sense. There is no reasoning or evaluation in the moment of temptation that should lead to someone saying;
“This is really stupid. I am risking so much of what I truly love and value
just to have another orgasm … I should stop right now!!!”
Instead, because their mental brakes are shot and sexual sin has become a very well ingrained habit, and in spite of the severe consequences, he goes ahead and has an intern perform oral sex on Mr. President, while in the Oval Office of the White House.
Is there a way to repair the damage we have caused by early in life hardwiring our brains to look to sexual sin as a way of escape? Yes, there is! I have not only experienced it myself but have helped hundreds of other men do it as well.
However, here is the problem … it is not a quick fix. It is learning what we need to do as soon as we begin to realize that we are being tempted and instead of choosing the path that will lead us to another fall, we take the path that will lead us away from sexual sin and the darkness in which it exists … and instead move into the light of obedience and take proper action away from the temptation.
Sounds easy, doesn’t it? But you and I both know that it is not. If we have developed a very strong neurological pathway in our brain that takes us from even the smallest thought or a sexual image enters our line of vision, we begin a series of actions so that we can get alone, get online, look at sexual images and have an orgasm.
So, how do we begin to change this powerful behavioral addiction which has been part of our lives for years if not decades? How do we get new brakes back into our brain so that we can stop this addictive process and begin to learn to walk in purity?
The answer to that question is a long one. One could ask me how to feel better and the answer seems simple initially. Right good food, exercise, and get a good night’s sleep will begin to create change. But the question; How do I stop this addictive behavior that has been a part of my life since I was about 12 years old … is a much more complicated problem.
Let’s begin by looking at our reality. Porn has become omnipresent. Anyone anywhere can now access any kind of porn they want. The fashion industry has made sensual clothing that is being worn from the bedroom to the boardroom. We are surrounded by advertising that knows the golden rule … sex sells. So, we are surrounded by sexual advertisements.
Then, to make matters worse, there is something inside of us the Bible calls your sin nature or our flesh. It is filled with evil desires and has only grown stronger as we have fed it what it wants or what it lusts for. Add to that the truth that we are behind enemy lines and we are not doing battle against flesh and blood but against the principalities and power of darkness … demonic forces. And you should realize that we are all in a huge battle for our lives.
Over the past 13 years and 9 months, I have been working on solving this problem in my own life and the lives of many other Christian believers. There is biblical truth that we need to learn and there are practical truth and actions that we need to take.
I have created the 180 Recovery Program which contains 25 videos of my teaching this program and a companion workbook. We have churches using these materials. We also have Online Support Teams working through this program.
For the first time, I am making these videos and workbook available to the public and you can purchase them for yourself. They are designed to be learned and practiced in the context of community, but I am making them available to anyone who wants to purchase them. If you desire to have this information, please email me and we can make that happen for you.
Better yet, you can join one of our Online Support Teams and I will walk you through our program myself using online streaming, weekly accountability, and daily support. Just pull your brain in and we will give you new brakes.
