3 Great Reasons Why We Should Memorize Scripture ~ blog

When I talk with some people about memorizing Scripture some have an immediate answer to the thought.  It is; “Well, I have never been good at memorizing.”  So, I like to ask them;

            “What is your home address?”

            “What is your phone number?”

            “Do you know your social security number?”

            “What are the names of your parents and siblings?”

            “Can you tell me every city and street you have lived on during your life?”

            “Do you know John 3:16?”

You get my point.  These people who believe they cannot memorize Scripture have tons of information they have memorized.  They know this information because they have had to recall it numerous times.  They have memorized it without even realizing it.  Then we all got smartphones and now we don’t remember anything … hahaha!

True, I have my Bible on my smartphone and computer. However, that is the same as carrying my Bible around with me where ever I go. The problem is if it is not in my mind it cannot be renewing my mind.  It is like me owning a handgun, which I do and have it locked away in a safe, but if I am in the middle of a mass shooting it is of no good to me where it is kept.

Stop telling yourself you cannot memorize Scripture and just start doing it.  Here are some reasons why and tomorrow I will teach you how to do it.

Reason # 1Knowing some of the Word of God by heart is a way of protecting yourself.

How can a young person keep their way pure?

By living according to your word.

I have hidden your word in my heart

that I might not sin against you.”

Psalm 119:9 and 11

Reason # 2 – Meditating on God’s Word brings prosperity and growth.

 “How blessed is the man who does not walk

in the counsel of the wicked,

Nor stand in the path of sinners,

Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!

But his delight is in the law of the Lord,

And in His law he meditates day and night.

He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,

Which yields its fruit in its season

And its leaf does not wither;

And in whatever he does, he prospers.”

Psalm 1

Reason # 3 – The Scriptures are the only Offensive Weapon Christians Have.

If you study the full armor of God listed in Ephesians 6 all of the pieces of armor are for our protection.  The truth protects our loins.  The breastplate, the shield and the helmet all protecting important body parts.  However, the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God can be used to attack demonic influences and worldly thinking.

If you look at the temptation of Christ by satan in the desert after His 40 days of fasting, every temptation Christ defeated quoting Scripture.  That tells us a lot of the value of memorizing the Word of God.

We feed our bodies on a regular basis because food gives us the energy and nutrients our bodies need to stay healthy and perform the ways we need them to perform.

Jesus said;

“Man cannot live by bread alone

but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

If you are spiritually starving yourself by not learning the Word of God, you will be weakened and far more vulnerable to temptation.  For all of us, this battle against sexual sin comes down to what we think with our minds and what we think with our minds will be highly influenced with what we look at with our eyes.

Lord, help me today to begin or continue to start learning your Word and using it against this world, my flesh, and the demonic forces aligned against me today. Help me to view every person with honor and respect because they are created in the image of God and to not allow there to be even a hint of sexual immorality in my thinking.  Amen!
