Lie # 5 – You Will Never be Free from Sexual Sin ~ blog

 In Daily Encouragement

How many times have you heard this lie?  Probably every time you have tried to stop and then fall again.  The enemy is right there telling you that it is impossible to get free from this sin that so easily entangles us.  We can see from our own history that we cannot find freedom and many people give up trying and decide to keep acting out on an occasional basis.

But that doesn’t work because sexual sin will always want more and more of you.  It wants more of your time, more of your energy, and more of your lusts.  It will lead you to places where you will find exactly what really turns you on and offers you an almost unlimited supply of porn. Then, it will want more of your time seeing the specific things your flesh is craving.

So, how do we deal with this lie? If we look at our past, we will see little hope for getting free of sexual sin.  Empty and broken promises litter our path like Dixie cups along a marathon race path.

However, what if we look to God instead of to our past.  What if we see what Scripture tells us is possible and believe that by the power of the Spirit and being part of a community of likeminded men, we can begin to experience more and more freedom?  I have found it to be true in my own life and in the lives of the hundreds of men we have helped in 180 Ministries.

Notice what Paul tells us in Romans 6:12-14;

“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

We need to choose daily who our master will be.  That is why we need to offer our bodies as living sacrifices to God on a daily basis.  Fail to do that and by default, you will end up walking in the flesh instead of the Spirit.

Then, Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 3:17-18;

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

Where is the Spirit of the Lord right now?  He is dwelling inside your body.  We are told that our bodies are the temple of the Spirit and He is living inside of you right now and will be in us forever.

Part of all of our recoveries is to have faith and believe that God is going to enable you to walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the desires of the flesh. That the Spirit in every temptation has a way for you to escape so that you can stand up under it.

The real problem is we have spent years if not decades developing this habitual sin in our lives, but we want it to go away instantly or quickly.  Also, we live in this fallen world where we now have the ability to look at porn at any time and in any place.  Thanks to the internet and our smartphones porn has become omnipresent.

However, it is also possible to use your phone as a way to reach out for help instead of reaching out for porn.  This is why in our Online Support Teams everybody on each team has their own GroupMe texting group so that nobody ever has to be alone.  When the men are even beginning to feel tempted, they can text everyone in the group and ask for help and prayers.  Some men will even call one another so as to not face temptation alone.

For those of you who refuse to find someone you can be brutally honest with because you are ashamed of the sexual sin into which you have fallen, I believe that you really will not be able to stop sinning sexually.  This addiction is too powerful and too omnipresent for any of us to be able to walk in purity alone.

At 180 Ministries we have a saying …

However, sheep that find a flock or a team of other sheep willing to really be there for one another are able to begin to find the freedom that our hearts long for.
