The Value of Being Still ~ blog

 In Daily Encouragement

The second thing we need to be doing to help in our recovery is to be still.

Did you slow down at all over the weekend, or are you still going so fast you are cutting out what is vital to your spiritual health to deal with the tyranny of the urgent?

On Saturday we talked about the idea of slowing down.  Living one day at a time requires us to slow down.  We need time to be with God.  To talk with Him and listen to Him.  To let His Spirit comfort and counsel us and to meditate on His word.

This next idea is taking the Slow Down idea to the limit … BEING STILL.  It is less about the pace at which we move physically and more about stillness in our soul.  Our culture is constantly trying to speed us up.  We try to do more and more and have the technology to do it.  However, we push ourselves too far and go too fast until something breaks, and we are forced into having to rest in order to recover.

Being still has always been hard on me since when I was growing up, I began to develop Tourette’s Syndrome.  It wasn’t that I did not want to sit still … I could not sit physically still.  However, on the inside, in my mind and in my spirit, I was driven to achieve and succeed.  I was well educated and trained and ready to make my mark on the world. I was taught to believe that my worth and value was not in who I was but in what I could achieve.

However, do you know what my problem was? I was trusting in my own strength and that was my undoing.  When I tried to handle it all and make things happen, I learned the limits I really had.  It was like God said; “Ok, you think you can handle it and have it all under control – let’s see what happens when I remove my hand.”  He did and my life unraveled.

I make a lousy god and actually we all do.  Some of you do not yet believe that.  You are still trying to be in control of your own recovery. You use your skills of discipline to hold sexual sin at bay for a time, but sooner or later crash and burn again.

In brokenness, we find the strength of God.  In my weakness, His strength comes through.  Every day I need to bring my brokenness to Him and be still in His presence.  Listen to the words of Psalm 42 …

1 God is our refuge and strength,

an ever-present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way

and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam

and the mountains quake with their surging.

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

the holy place where the Most High dwells.

5 God is within her, she will not fall;

God will help her at break of day.

6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;

he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD Almighty is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress.

8 Come and see what the LORD has done,

the desolations he has brought on the earth.

9 He makes wars cease

to the ends of the earth.

He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;

he burns the shields with fire.

10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in the earth.”

11 The LORD Almighty is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Your recovery will get better the more you Slow Down the exhausting pace of your life and Be Still in His presence and listen to Him … to allow Him the time it will take to restore your soul.

Almost every week in one of the 12 Online Support Teams I hear men saying that they struggle more with temptation and falling into sexual sin when they ignore spending time with the Lord.  They after they have a fall they repent and make a commitment to meet with the Lord at the beginning of their day.

And almost every one of them says that their day goes better, they deal with temptation better, and stay connected to their Online Support Team better when they begin their day spending time with the Lord.

It is true that every day is a new day. Another chance to live our lives the way the Lord wants us to live. Another opportunity to be strengthened by Him and escape temptation.  Or it can be another day of falling back into sexual sin.  I hope and pray you take the time to BE STILL, know that HE is God and not you, and surrender yourself to His will for you today.
