The First Step Towards Transformation ~ blog
I have been sitting here wrestling with what do I want to tell you relative to a subject that most of us don’t want to hear about. This subject applies to every Christian whether or not they struggle with sexual sin.
Every Christian is on a journey. We are on this journey because God has given to us new life in Christ. He chose us. He adopted us. He drew us to Jesus. He gave us faith and grace to believe. He caused us to be born again. He sealed us with His Spirit. And at the end of our life, He will take us to heaven where we will be perfect forever and ever.
Until the time of going to heaven arrives, we have our lives to live in the here and now. And in the here and now we are in a battle with the world, our flesh and the devil. These are forces working against us and seeking to make our lives as miserable as possible.
Porn and sexual sin are one of the main weapons the devil is using against us. This part of us that God created and has given to us to share in marriage with our spouse has been hijacked and is being used against us. We have immediate access to porn 25/7/365 and it has become a serious addiction in our lives. And we have had a terrible time trying to stop using sex to help us feel better.
In the 180 Recovery Program, I teach you the biblical truths that God has given us to defend ourselves against temptation as well as the practical things we need to do to begin to find freedom from sexual sin. Establishing strong boundaries with strong consequences is how we begin this journey. Once that is done, we need to turn around and fix our eyes on Jesus and begin to grow stronger spiritually.
As we maintain our boundaries and then begin to do what we need to do to grow spiritually we will find the Spirit transforming us into more Christ-like believers. However, what are the things we need to do to grow spiritually and experience the transformation of the Spirit in our life?
I have good news and bad news. The good news is that spiritual growth can be accomplished one day at a time by being consistent in spiritual disciplines. The bad news is that spiritual growth can be accomplished one day at a time by us having to be consistent in spiritual disciplines.
What I am saying is growing spiritually into becoming a stronger man in Christ is not accomplished by some super-spiritual accomplishment that takes a huge amount of time each day. It most likely will not be caused by some incredible experience where God touches you and zaps you into instant Christlikeness. That is what I call the Zap Trap.
However, it can be accomplished in the day to day living of our lives, but we must … we must … we absolutely must create some time in our lives where we surrender ourselves to God every day, deepen our knowledge of biblical truth, and commune with Jesus.
Let me put it another way. We must do the Spiritual Disciplines God tells us to do to facilitate a deepening and strengthening of our relationship with Christ.
Believe me when I say I know that the word “discipline” kind of sticks in our throat. For most if not all of our Christian life we feel this huge sense of guilt that we have not done what we need to do. We have never done enough. We have never prayed enough. We have never studied the Bible enough. We have not done the daily things we believe every Christian must do so that they will not fall into sexual sin.
And falling into sexual sin is one thing we have become disciplined in. We can easily find time every day to look at porn and act out because it gives us immediate pleasure. Even though the pleasure passes, and we feel more guilt and condemnation we keep going back for more because we are addicted.
Is it possible to stop doing the addictive behaviors that are destroying our lives and begin to do the things that will help us walk out of our addiction and into a place of spiritual health? Absolutely it can be done. I know because I have done it myself and so have many other men that I know and have helped.
So, here is the central truth we need to grasp.
With God all things are possible!!
What I have not been able to accomplish on my own I can experience as I live in communion with Jesus every day, learn to walk in the Spirit every day, and nourish myself through the Bible, prayer, and community.
What I am talking about is beginning to do the normal spiritual disciplines that have helped Christians for over 2000 years. It is not something that will come easily … you already know that. But if you could learn a way to take the time to grow a little more every day would you be willing to do it?
Or, to put it another way … if I can teach you the spiritual disciplines that come straight from the Bible and show you have to make them a part of your day every day would you be willing to try it?
I sure hope so … because the abundant life Jesus promised us will begin to take root in your life and you will begin to become more like Christ which will feel better than sex and will remain with you day after day.
