Brain Wars – The Battle Between Your Ears ~ blog
When it comes right down to it the most incredible organ in our bodies is our brain. Without it, our bodies would be useless. You have never gone to your doctor and heard him or her say that you are brain dead. Every thought, action, idea, memory, breath, sight, hearing, touching, smelling, tasting … all are processed by our brain.
This is why what we think about and what we learn is so vital to our spiritual, mental, and emotional health. It processes information and creates reactions to process the input and tells our bodies what to do.
In order for us to grow in our recovery, we need to learn how our brains can help us maintain sexual purity. This might be a change in your thinking because we all have acquired a large adult bookstore in our mind that we have frequented on a regular basis. It is where our thoughts want to go when we are under stress and want to escape into fantasy land.
When we are experiencing emotions like stress, fear, anxiety, pain, sorrow, depression, relational conflicts, insecurity … just about any emotion that makes us feel bad – we turn to something that will allow us to escape into a different world. Some turn to drugs, alcohol, food, gambling, work but perhaps the greatest and easiest escape is sex.
It is so simple and so effective. When we begin to be aroused all of our worries go into a file titled “LATER” and feelings of excitement, pleasure, and expectations arise. We begin to think with the brain below our belt instead of the one on our shoulders. Our animal instincts and the desire to indulge in a sexual activity show up in a matter of seconds and we find the escape we have been looking for and have been using for years if not decades.
After the fireworks finale explodes and we have this powerful sexual experience things begin to go back to normal and we ask ourselves;
“Why did I do that … again?”
As the feelings of pleasure wane, the pain and stress we were escaping come back and we are no better off than before but have added another straw of guilt and shame … hoping it was not the last straw that might break our back. We go into clean up mode. Deleting histories and websites we have gone to. Beating ourselves up with a period of self-loathing and fear our secret might be discovered. And the cycle starts all over again. Always going further and deeper than we could have ever imagined.
This is why one of the most important parts of recovering from our sexual brokenness is dealing with our brain. There are memories there that need to be deleted. There are wounds in there that need to be healed. Then there are the things we see during our day that appeals to our lusts. A person at work or on the sidewalk or even in church can become a trigger for our brain to begin to get revved up for action.
Over the last 14 years of my life, I have been battling my sexual addiction. I have learned things that have helped me win the battle for my brain. Some are basic truths of Scripture while others are just practical steps that have helped me and others that I work with.
Quite frankly, the way we have been living and thinking for years has produced an appetite for lust and sex. We have trained ourselves to look at other people as objects for us to use for our own sexual ends. Humans created in the image of God are being used by us as objects of lust. Something to be consumed and thrown away.
The limitless buffet of sexual sin is always open and almost everything is free. It can be accessed 24/7/365 and gives us an instant fix that does not fix anything. All the while taking us deeper into sin and further away from the place of purity God has for us. A place where we do not feel condemnation, self-loathing, anxiety and fear.
This place of purity, abiding in Christ, and filled with the Spirit is where we can find the real peace we are looking for. Where there is grace and forgiveness. Where our loving heavenly Father can encourage us instead of disciplining us. Where the Lord sits on His throne of Grace and waits for us to come bodily to receive help in our time of need. And where the Spirit has the power He wants to give us so that we do not walk in the flesh but can walk in the light and be truthful.
This place of purity is not an unachievable location. However, God does not usually lift us out of the bed we have made for ourselves and in which we have been sleeping. It is a place where the Spirit wants to take us so we can experience His fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control. Actually, it is not a destination at all but the Spirit TRANSFORMING us into the image of Christ.
It is where God intends us to be … unentangled by the sin that so easily entangles us. Walking in the Light as He is in the Light with the blood of Christ cleansing us from all of our sins. And a place where we can experience the fellowship or community with other believers from whom we can experience help for our battle as well as giving help to them in their battle.
This will be my focus for this week. Brain Wars – The Battle Between Your Ears. This is another battle that you cannot win on your own but certainly cannot afford to lose. I have learned what it takes to take every thought captive and maintain purity in my thoughts, and I will be sharing these biblical ideas with you.
