One of the major problems in our Brain Wars is having to deal with the thoughts in our heads that need to be identified as wrong and removed. There is a process we are told about in Romans 12:2 that specifically speaks to this need for every believer.
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
This verse is not just suggesting that we change our way of thinking. That can be accomplished by learning new information that points out what we were thinking was wrong because of evidence to the contrary.
For example, have you ever had a conversation with someone who believes that the earth is flat? That is right. There are people today who really believe that. I know one and trying to change their thinking with things like … SCIENCE … is a waste of breath. However, I did manage to convince him that we really did land on the moon.
What this passage is telling us is that our minds can be more than just gaining new knowledge … but that our mind itself can be being renewed. Now, this renewal of our minds happens in two ways. There is first the renewal that happened in the past when we were saved. This is clear from Titus 3:5;
“He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit …”
There was a renewal when we were born again and what an incredible renewal it was. This word “renewal” does not speak to something that has been restored like one might restore a piece of furniture with sanding and a fresh coat of paint. But a restoration that is of a new quality. We went from being dead in sin to being alive in Christ. We are new creations because God gave to us a new life.
However, now that we are new creations in Christ there is to be a continuous renewing day by day that is the responsibility of us and the Spirit working together. It is the Spirit who has the power to transform us, but it is us who are to be renewing our mind by what we are putting into it.
As people who are entangled in the sin of our sexual brokenness, this is such a critical thing for us to allow the Spirit to do as we do our part of learning the truths that are in the Bible.
Before we came to Christ and when we were dead in sin and our mind was under the control of our sinful flesh and was being molded by the information from our fallen and sinful world. Once we became born again, we were given new life in Christ and we became born again into a new life that is spiritual and we became children of God’s family.
However, our mind was not completely made new as if our memory banks were erased, our cookies deleted, and our thoughts made incapable of being sinful. No, we still live in the same fallen world, we still have our sinful nature living inside of us, and we still have demonic forces to deal with.
There are lies that we have believed about ourselves that need to be rooted out and put to death. There may be things in our past that were abusive and horrible that have left wounds in our souls that need to be healed. And there are just fundamental truths about us that we need to learn, believe, and hold on to.
And it is these truths that we learn from ingesting the word of God. Our minds will only be renewed if we are putting into it new truths about us and God. His Word is living and active and has the power to pierce the thoughts and intentions of our hearts.
As we are putting these truths and new information from God’s word into our brains there can be renewal in our thinking and a growing transformation of our lives.
Last night I was watching a show on Amazon Prime I became aware of how dark this show was. It was showing how evil was harming the people of this town and creating the idea that nothing good could be accomplished because of the history of evil men doing what was helping their businesses at the expense of everyone else.
The thought came to me … why am I watching this garbage? I like the actor who was the good guy called in to save the day and I am sure that in the end, that is what he will do. But in the process of setting that good conclusion up there was the glorification of evil which, quite frankly, was sickening to my brain. I turned it off and will not ever watch that show or any show from that series again.
Also, for the past month or so I have had a renewed interest in watching the news because of what is happening in Washington DC and the developing events which will probably lead to an impeachment vote in the House of Representatives. What has that done to my thinking? It causes me concern that people on both sides are spinning the facts which only make me think … how did these people ever get elected?
What we all need to be putting into practice is filling our minds with the truth of God’s word so that it can be a light unto our path. We can know the truth and truth will set us free. We will never win our own Brain War unless we are stockpiling the truth of God’s Word into our mind. However, when we are doing that … transformation can happen.
