Being Lights in this Present Darkness ~ blog
As I sit here writing my emails, I look out the window to a view of the huge oak trees in my back yard. It was one of the reasons we moved in here 20 years ago. Behind our property is a ravine with about 20 massive oaks and some maple trees that have been here for over 100 years.
With all those trees come acorns and leaves and over the next few weeks, everything but the trees will be lying on the ground. We love seeing the color of the changing leaves but alas, someone has to deal with the fallout and that someone would be me. I have simplified the work by owning a Ryobi backpack leaf blower that blows the leaves down into the ravine, but after 15 years it has died.
So, I went to Home Depot and bought the Mack Daddy of all leaf blowers with the greatest amount of power they had and cannot wait to use it. There will be literally millions of leaves on my small back yard and they will soon be feeling the impact of my man-made wind machine and be blown down into the ravine … where they belong.
It is another Fall in Ohio. I love Fall. It is the time for harvest. It is the time farmers gather in their crops reaping the rewards of their labor through the Spring and Summer. It is time for apple cider and Oktoberfest’s. It is a time to be thankful for the provisions God has given to us and to enjoy warm days and chilly nights.
However, fall is also a time of preparation. We know what is coming as our once green lawns will be fields of snow. I will have to start wearing socks again and we need to wear heavy coats, caps, and gloves if we are going outside for any length of time to shovel the driveway or build a snowman and snowwoman (being politically correct) with the kids.
This Fall of 2019 is a rather interesting time if you live in the USA, the UK, or Canada. Canada just re-elected its current president Justin Trudeau. The UK is having to deal with Boris Johnson and in the USA, we are observing our President, Donald Trump who has made watching the news rather entertaining just to see what he said or did today. Never have late-night talk show hosts and comedians had so much easy material to work with.
I will spare you from hearing my take on what is happening in the politics of the USA. It is a troubling time no matter which side of the aisle you lean toward. It seems as if civility is not even attempted to be maintained. We will be entering 12 months of more accusations and denials with an endless number of commercials that will leave our heads spinning and wondering what is true and what is false.
Paul writes to his disciple Timothy who was the pastor of the church in Ephesus these words which we would do well to remember;
“First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
So, I wanted to remind all of us that we need to be praying for the leaders we have regardless of how we feel they are doing in their leadership, or lack thereof. They are people that God has allowed to be in offices of authority whether we like it or not. There will be times when one needs to protest, and even civil disobedience may be used. However, prayer should be our first response and our continuing practice.
One thing I know, no matter what will happen over the next 12 months … God is still on His Throne. He is the Sovereign One and we are told to draw near to His Throne of Grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace in our time of need.
We are going to need His mercy and grace so that we might live a life glorifying to Him as the next 12 months unfold. We are called to be the faithful ones who seek to live godly lives regardless of what is happening around us. We are to still be the salt and light in our world especially to those who are losing hope and suffering loss.
For the darker, our world becomes the more our light will be needed to help others come out of the darkness and into His glorious light.
This is John Doyel … and I approve this message.
