Lies and Their Deadly Conclusions ~ blog
One of the main lies that many believe, and which keeps them shackled to sexual sin is that they will never be free from this sin that so easily entangles them. I hear this from people all the time. They believe it because there is so much evidence for that “fact” that is first-hand and their own experience that it just seems the only conclusion one can believe.
It is hard to come to any other conclusion. We are exposed to sexual sin early in our lives. For me, it was the age of 12 when I found my father’s Playboy magazines and was so delighted with what I found you would think I had found gold. Porn gold … has its own gold fever and will drive a person to seek it more and more as a sexual addiction begins to develop in one’s mind.
However, porn seems better than gold. Gold has to be found, collected, purified and sold to the highest bidder. Porn gives almost immediate excitement, delivers a “rush” of its own, and ends with an orgasm of pleasure and excitement.
Like almost all addictions it is very easy and enjoyable on the way down. And in today’s world with the World Wide Web one can be watching porn almost anywhere, and any time, and in any place. This is thrilling in the beginning when we discover there is literally an inexhaustible supply and so much of it is free … at least financially free.
However, somewhere along the line of our falling deeper and deeper into sexual sin … being driven by more variety and more intensity, we have a moment of sanity and realize that we are in a place from which we cannot seem to escape. What we thought was a warm embrace of our multifaceted lovers ends up being a reticulated python whose intent is to swallow us whole after squeezing the life out of us.
Then things get desperate and one begins to panic. You realize you are trapped and need help to break free from this highly addictive behavior. However, try as you will your will seems wimpy against the powerful forces sucking you deeper into its lair.
You might look for help but realize that going to a counselor or a friend might raise suspicion and lead to your spouse catching a whiff that something is wrong. You do not want to tell your pastor or friends because shame has you cornered and so you tell yourself you can beat this if you really try harder.
And that is what we do. We remain isolated, weak, vulnerable, and afraid. We make new resolutions at the beginning of the year only to find ourselves falling again a short time later.
At that point, we have believed the lie …
“I will never be free from this sin.”
However, I can prove to you that it is a lie and that it is possible to be freed from your sexual addiction. I can do this in two ways I will call the Long-Term Plan and the Short-Term Plan.
The Long-Term Plan – I can absolutely promise you that you will be free from your sexual addiction and your sexual sin based on what we read in the Bible. Paul says in Philippians 1:6;
“For I am confident of this very thing,
that He who began a good work in you
will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”
At the end of our life, our body dies unless Jesus returns before then. When our body dies so will our sin nature or flesh. It is out of our sin nature/flesh that our evil desires come according to James 1:14 – “But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.” When our body dies our sinful nature/flesh dies with it and is gone forever.
Our soul and spirit will go to heaven and we will receive new bodies for our soul and spirit to live in and we will never, ever, be tempted to sin again. This will be reinforced by the fact that in heaven there is no sin nor are there any demons or any kind of evil. Our perishable body will be gone forever, and our soul and spirit will be placed into an imperishable body that will not age, become diseased nor experience any temptations.
And oh … by the way … we will be that way forever. I am currently 66 and maybe have another 20 years to go here. But in heaven with my perfect body in a perfect place where there is no sin or evil … I will dwell there for billions and trillions of years. So, indeed the Long-Term Plan will eventually happen … guaranteed!!!
The Short-Term Plan – This is where we need to focus our attention. We can have a full assurance that perfection in holiness in heaven forever is a part of our free gift of salvation through the finished work of Christ. However, in the here and now we can find freedom as well.
In Romans 6 Paul makes the case that all believers who know Christ as Savior have died to sin and are now alive to God. Then he writes;
“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”
What this passage is telling us is that we have a choice whether or not we will sin. We can allow sin to be our master again if we do not take the actions needed to put to death the deeds of the flesh and be filled with the Spirit of God.
