Is Sexual Addiction Really a Disease? ~ blog
Hello everyone!!! I have missed writing to you more than I would have imagined. My wife and I returned home this morning at about 1:00 AM after traveling since 9:00 AM the day before. We spent 9 days in Colombia, South America with my son and family.
I wanted to use the time away to just refresh my brain and listen to what the Lord would say to me as I stopped to get filled up and move forward. So, I decided to read two books that might help me to help you. Those books are;
The Biology of Desire – Why Addiction is Not a Disease – By Marc Lewis – Ph.D. 2015
Your Brain on Porn – Internet Pornography and the Emerging Science of Addiction
By Gary A. Wilson 2014
I want so much to help every one of you, as Christian believers find freedom from this highly addictive behavior that we all know is sinful and has the potential to destroy our lives. I believe that I know and understand what the Bible teaches about sexual sin … but what can I learn from science and how the brain works? How does one find themselves mired in this sin from which escape seems impossible?
First, I want to tell you that it is not impossible. I believe this because it comes from the lips of Jesus Himself. In Matthew 19:23-26 Jesus tells his disciples;
“And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again, I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
“When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, “Then who can be saved?” And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
So, can we agree that God can do anything and with God all things are possible? You may not believe that about yourself and your addiction to sexual sin. You may believe that you are entangled in the disease of sexual sin from which it is impossible for you to escape. You have believed lie that you are the worst sinner and others escape because they are not as bad as you are or have done the things that you have done.
So, please tattoo this across your forehead so you see it in the mirror every day.
With God All Things are Possible!!!
With God I can stop looking at Porn!!!
With God I can be healed from Sexual Sin!!!
Ok, Ok … you have said those things before but continue to fail. I know because I have been there and thought those things for years. Plus, I have worked with hundreds of men who have also believed they can never stop and yet they now have freedom. Not freedom from temptation. That will happen when we go to heaven and be our state forever. We will never, ever sin again forever. It is just now in the present that we must battle the world, our flesh, and demonic forces.
So, I wanted to begin digging into the science of the brain to see what we can learn about how addiction begins and grows so that we might learn how to apply biblical truth to the science of the brain. I have even asked a medical doctor who is a brain doctor and a Christian to help me think this through. We both seriously want to find the scientific truths to combine with the spiritual truths of sex addiction and how to experience healing.
So, is your addiction a disease or not? At the end of the day I have so ask; “Does that really even matter?” I can clearly read in the gospels that Jesus is all-powerful and can easily heal any disease. A man born blind has his eyesight restored. A man lame for decades can jump up and walk. Even a son and a daughter and one of His friends Lazarus were raised from the dead in an instant by the power of Jesus.
Why has not God healed you despite the pleas you have made and the promises you have cried out? Honestly … I do not know because I do not know your history, your experiences, and what you have done to try and stop.
Here is what I absolutely know from Scripture.
Healing from Sexual Addiction is Possible … because I have experienced it myself.
This transformational healing is the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
I must learn to be filled with the Spirit and walk in the Spirit, so I do not fulfill the desires of the flesh.
I must live in a community with other believers where I have strong accountability and daily support because a lone sheep is a dead sheep.
It will take an undying desire and commitment to God the Spirit and my support team for me to begin walking out of this addiction.
Now, let’s see what we can also learn from science about how we can rewire our brains to help us in this journey towards freedom.
