My Biggest Crucial Question??????? ~ blog
Ok … I have been in my own recovery for 5233 days. Currently, 180 Ministries is ministering to over 3000 people in 57 nations around the world. I get emails almost daily that say these things …
“I need your help in pornography and masturbation. I am a Christian college student. I am doing it since grade 7. I tried but couldn’t stop it. Even I stopped for one year straight but came back again. Please help me.”
“Please help me I really need help to overcome my pornography addiction and I’m really struggling on my own.”
“Hi John. I keep going around in circles making the same mistakes over and over again as life gets busy. I struggle with pornography as well as going to massage parlors.”
Those are only from yesterday and today. I really do feel the pain and frustration they have been experiencing. Some are depressed and filled with self-loathing. Most are desperate for help. I know I used to be there as well but have experienced God’s healing from my addiction to sex and has done a work of transformation in the way I think and the temptations that I feel.
So, here is my biggest question I am asking God on all of our behalfs. Since we know that the Holy Spirit is in us and will never leave us or forsake us. And we know that the Holy Spirit is God, the third member of the Trinity with the Father and the Son. And we know the Holy Spirit is all-powerful and all-knowing. And His purpose of dwelling in our bodies is to help us walk in sexual purity and not fulfill the desires of the flesh …
Why am I not Being Transformed More than I Am?
Why has God not taken away my desires for inappropriate sexual behaviors? Why am I still being driven back to porn and masturbation? What do I need to do so that I can begin to experience more of the transformation of the Holy Spirit and become more like Jesus?
This is going to be a series of emails where I am going to try and answer your questions as well as my own. If you want me to deal with a question directly just email it to me and I can make that a part of this new series on the Holy Spirit. So, today I want to start with the basics of what we need to know about God the Holy Spirit.
First – The Holy Spirit is God – Just as the Father is God and the Son is God the Spirit is also God. Now without trying to explain this remarkable truth that there is only One God but that He exists in three unique and different roles can we just accept that God exists as a Trinity?
In fact, the Spirit is the first specific member of the Trinity we are introduced to in the Bible where we read;
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.”
Before we are even introduced to the idea that God is our Father and that Jesus is the Son of God who will be the one to crush the head of the serpent, we are introduced to the idea that the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
Second – The Holy Spirit is God indwelling Your Body – Jesus told his disciples that it would be better for them if He leaves them. He says this;
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.”
This happened when you accepted Christ as your Savior. The moment you believed the Spirit entered your body and He dwells in you still … in spite of our repeated failures to sexual sin … because Jesus said He would be with us FOREVER (see verse above)!!!
He is God’s guarantee that we will receive our inheritance in heaven. We are sealed with Him forever. So, how important do you think He is in helping us find freedom from our sexual brokenness? Why hasn’t He just healed me from my sinful sexual desires? What do I need to do or be doing so that God in my body is changing me into a better person?
Third – The Holy Spirit’s Job is the Transform Us – Paul tells us in Galatians 5;
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.”
Apparently, the key to stopping falling back into sexual sin is to do something he calls “walk by the Spirit.”
There is so much we need to learn, understand, and practice relative to continually walking by means of the Spirit and we will learn more about that tomorrow.
For now… just begin to ask the Spirit every day to fill you. Ask for Him to lead and guide you in your thoughts and actions and call out to Him when you are beginning to be tempted.
