Being Strengthened in Our Inner Being.2 ~ blog
We know we are weak against this powerful addiction. We seem to be able to hate it and yet love it at the same time. There are times or repentance, sorrow, confession and rededication of ourselves to God after a fall or falls. Then some time passes, and the desires come back again. Someone catches our eye perhaps even in church or an ad online and our itch wants to be scratched all over again as the desires for a sexual climax grows.
Something negative happens at home or at work that angers us, and we turn again to sexual sin for an escape from the stress or pain we are feeling. We could have a drink or use drugs or food to escape but porn seems to be the easiest and almost instantaneous relief we can find. And even though we know it will not solve the problems we face…it will be some intense pleasure for a time only to end up feeling worse than before.
So, to combat this weakness that every Christian man, married or single, has to deal with on a daily basis we know we need help. I believe that praying this prayer that Paul prayed for the Ephesians can do that. Not completely because there are other things we need to do as well, but this gets to the heart of the issue and the beginning of freedom from the Pornovirus pandemic that has already swept the world population.
Let’s look again at this prayer for there is much more we can glean from it.
“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;”
We should all realize that it is critical for us to be experiencing the power of the Spirit strengthening us in our inner being. It is His power that can make up for our weaknesses. He is in us and one of His main jobs is to strengthen us in our inner man. Which begs the question;
“What is my inner man or inner woman?”
Our inner man or inner woman is part of the new creation we have become by being born again. The old man or woman has died with Christ and no longer lives. We have been born again and there is truly a new inner being inside this same body. We did not receive a new body, but we will. So, we look the same and have all the same tastes, thoughts, and ideas. But there is a new inner person who is now alive to God and eternally connected with the Family of God. PLUS, we are not indwelled by the Holy Spirit.
So, your inner person is the new you…the real you. Obviously, this is not referring to our flesh and blood but more to our mind, soul and spirit. And this New You is susceptible to the desires of our flesh. It faces the world filled with access to sexual sin and it is in a battle with demonic forces.
Does it not then make sense that this inner person or the new person needs to be strengthened? Because if it is not being strengthened by a power outside of ourselves then we will not have the power in and of ourselves to live a pure and holy Christian life. Our flesh is too powerful and has been developing our whole lives. Our world has made porn omnipresent and we all have been infected with the Pornovirus.
Halleluiah, there is already an antidote!!! There is an answer and a way to not have to give in to our sexual lusts and to be able to walk in purity. But we must be strengthened in our inner being from a source of power that is not part of who we are. We need an external power source that has actually become an internal power source and that is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.
Notice Paul literally says this in the prayer. He says;
“…to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man…”
I do not care how powerful a hold sexual sin has had on your life. We can choose to live a life of constant excuses and rationalizations of why we can continue to fall back into sexual sin. We can justify it with things from our past or the family in which we grew up.
Some of you have even been abused and have had severe trauma in your life which needs to be addressed by a professional. I am not telling you to ignore the help that can come from counseling and even medication to treat what might be physically or mentally impacting your body and mind.
However, what might happen if you pray for the Spirit to strengthen you with power in your inner being? What if you pray for it daily? What if you pray it instantly when you find yourself being tempted?
Will God answer that prayer??? Of course, He will for He has promised us that anytime we pray something that we know is His will we can have the assurance that He will answer that prayer. This is taught in 1 John 5:14-15;
“This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.”
Pray today…pray every day that God the Father will strengthen you in your inner new creation by the power of the Holy Spirit so that you can walk in the Spirit and STOP fulfilling the desires of the flesh.
Do it right now if you have not already done it for today! And pray it as many times as you need to every day.
