180’s Boot Camp Manual

According to Wikipedia, D-Day is “…a military term denoting the day on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated. ‘D-Day’ often represents a variable, designating the day upon which some significant event will occur or has occurred”

When most of us hear the word D-Day we think back to World War II and the beaches of Normandy.  The date was June 6, 1944 when over 5,000 ships were used to place 160,000 men on a 50-mile stretch of beach along the coast of France.  From this beachhead the invasion to recapture Europe from the powerful military might of the Nazi’s began.

It is my prayer that today will be your D-Day.  I hope that enlisting in Boot Camp will be the beginning of a beachhead in your journey to recovery from sexual brokenness.  We have fallen and become captured by the world, the flesh, and the devil and we need to be set free from the powers that keep us falling into sexual sin.

To be set free we must first get through a very challenging period of withdrawal.  Every recovering alcohol and drug addict knows that this is phase one of recovery – getting through withdrawal. It is a time period that cannot be by-passed but walked through.  It is a time of loneliness, pain, tremendous urges and temptation and the only way through it is to walk through it one step at a time with a lot of help from others.

However, once one gets through withdrawal, once a beachhead has been established, we can move forward in our recovery and begin dealing with deeper issues that are driving us to sexually sin.  The battle is a long one and a difficult one, but it gets better.  The enemy we face is powerful but the one who dwells within us, the Spirit of God, is infinitely greater than any enemy we have to face.

Boot Camp begins with your D-Day.  You are choosing to embark on a 42-day journey.  The essence of this period is to help you develop the spiritual disciplines necessary to establish your beachhead and successfully recapture the areas of your life where the enemy has taken over.

Almost all of us know the things we are supposed to be doing to live a godly spiritual life.  Some people are disciplined by nature.  They are good at living an orderly and structured life.  However, many of us like to cut corners.  We love shortcuts.  We can get more done in less time.  Others of us are lazy.  We have lost our drive to succeed in the Christian life and have become obese in our wasting of time and energy.  We are entertaining ourselves to death and building lives of wood, hay and sticks instead of gold, silver and precious stones.

Nobody who is entering the military goes off to Boot Camp thinking it is going to be easy.  If you show up out of shape your road will only be more difficult.  The drill sergeant knows that his job is to prepare you for war. Your life will depend upon you learning how to fight and how to be part of a larger team.

Boot Camp will be a challenge.  It is not going to be easy.  It is designed to create change in your life.  To successfully complete it you are going to have to give up a number of things so that you can establish spiritual disciplines that, under the direction of the Spirit, will begin to change our life.  These disciplines, in and of themselves, will not change you.  The Holy Spirit of God is the one who transforms us.  When we are working out our salvation, by consistently doing what God has told us to do, we are placing ourselves in a position for the Spirit to transform us.

So I challenge you to count the cost.  Not everyone who begins Boot Camp will finish Boot Camp.  I grew up at the Naval Academy and every year in June a new class of plebes (freshmen) are sworn in and begin the process of becoming an officer in the United States Navy.  Not everyone who begins finishes.  Some wash out.  People “wash out” because they choose to leave or are not able to do what it takes to survive “plebe summer”.  Something about three strikes and you are out … vs grace and forgiveness.

 

Boot Camp Commitments

  1. I will spend time with God at the beginning and end of each day. Minimum of 30 minutes each session.
  2. I will read the bible, pray and work on scripture memory every day for 42 days.
  3. I will abstain from any form of sexual acting out for 42 days.
  4. I will abstain from sexual fantasy for 42 days.
  5. I will abstain from any and all use of pornography for 42 days.
  6. I will offer my body to God as a living sacrifice daily.
  7. I will ask for the Spirit to fill me and will seek to walk in the Spirit for 42 days.
  8. I will put on the full armor of God daily for 42 days.
  9. I will enlist the help of two spiritually mature brothers to be accountable with me every day for 42 days. This will be done either face to face or on the phone – every day for 42 days.
  10. I will attend the weekly Boot Camp Meeting without exception unless there is a  serious family emergency that requires my presence.
  11. If I give into sexual temptation either mentally or physically, I will immediately contact my Online Support Team members and accept the consequences of my actions.

 

Daily Times with God

Our brokenness has been the direct result of the choices we have made as well as the things that have happened to us.  To establish a beachhead for rebuilding our lives we all must start with deepening our relationship with God.  This does not just happen.  It takes work.  It takes hard work.  It takes hard work done consistently.

Every day you will do your Basic Training.  Basic Training will be the daily spiritual disciplines we need to master if we are going to have victory in our daily battle.  It will be a challenge to do these but they must be done in order for them to become a permanent part of our daily schedule and for us to become the men God wants us to be.

Basic Training will be broken into 2 time periods.  We will begin our day and end our day with God.  The first thing we do when we get out of bed will be to go and meet with God.  The last thing we will do each day, before we turn off the light and go to sleep, will be to spend time with God.  No excuses and no exceptions.  These times will be structured and you should plan for at least 30 minutes for each session.

The Morning Session will contain times for …

  • Praise and Worship through prayers of Adoration and Thanksgiving
  • Daily Foundational Morning Prayers
    • Offering our bodies to God
    • Being Filled with the Spirit
    • Walking in the Spirit
    • Putting on the Full Armor of God
  • Spiritual Breakfast – Daily Bible Reading
  • Scripture Memory Work

The Evening Session will contain times for …

 Praise for what God has done in you and for you that day

  • Daily Foundational Evening Prayers
    • Prayers for your family members
    • Prayers for your accountability partners
    • Prayers for the men in 180 working on their recovery
    • Prayer for the Lord’s protection of your thoughts and dreams
  • Review Memory Work as you are going to sleep

For the first week you will have all of these things written down for you to follow so that you learn the basics.  After that, these times of prayers can be built upon as the Spirit leads you regarding your specific needs and situations.

I realize that for some of you, who have a degree of spiritual maturity, this may seem elementary.  However, I want us all on the same page, doing the same things and being formed into a unit of men who are all at the same place in our training and thinking.  There is no room for pride.  We need to see ourselves as servants and humbly submit to the same requirements.

One issue for some will be doing the same thing over and over again.  You will think you have this down and it feels like you are doing it out of obligation and not from the heart.  Here is the bottom line.  The things we are going to be doing on a daily basis are commands God has given us to do on a daily basis.  I assume He commands it to be done because it needs to be done if we are going to become the men He wants us to be.  Check your attitude at the door and start to obey what our Father has commanded us to do.

Lastly, it will be helpful to you if you have a place where you can consistently meet with the Lord.  It should be a place where you can be undisturbed and not interrupted.  You should have whatever materials you need like your bible, journal and pen, and Boot Camp Manual.

Day 1 – AM

  1. Worship – spend some time praying prayers of thanksgiving for what God has done for you. Some examples are …
  • Thank the Father for choosing you before the Creation of the World loving you with an everlasting and faithful love.
  • Thank Him that He drew you to Jesus and gave you the faith to believe
  • Thank Jesus that he became a man so that He could be our Savior
  • Thank Jesus for dying for you and taking the punishment for your sins upon himself
  • Thank the Spirit for sealing you, indwelling you and never leaving or forsaking you in spite of your sin.
  • Thank the Spirit for being your Counselor and Comforter and ask that He guide you in your time every day.
  • Other specific things that He has done for you lately
  1. Confession – Ask the Spirit if there are any sins you need to confess so that your fellowship with God will not be hindered today. Spend some time listening and whatever He brings to your mind thank the Lord that He has forgiven it by the shed blood of Christ.
  2. Daily Prayers for Purity
  • Offer your body to God as a living sacrifice – (It may be of value to simply pray through Romans 12:1-2)
  • Ask the Spirit to fill you and to help you walk in the Spirit so that you do not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Ask Him to lead you throughout the day and to recognize whatever escapes He provides for you when temptation comes.
  • Pray on the Full Armor of God as listed in Ephesians 6:10-18
  1. Scripture Reading and Meditation – 1 Corinthians 6:13b-20

“The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never!  Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.

  1. Read over the passage several times slowly asking the Holy Spirit to help you understand what it is saying to you.
  2. Why does Paul say we are not our own in verse 19?
  3. Have you ever thought that your body is a part of Christ Himself? (v.15) What does that mean to you whenever you engage in sexual sin?
  4. We are told to flee sexual immorality. The idea behind the verb “flee” is to escape or to get away from something abhorrent and destructive.  Ask the Spirit to show you anything in your life that is drawing you into sexual sin.  List those things below.
  5. What do you need to do to get those things out of your life?
  6. Report to your accountability partners what those things are and discuss with them how you are going to get rid of them and confirm with them that you have in fact done that. Do it today!

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Note – At our weekly Boot Camp Meeting (BCM) you will be required to quote the memory passages from memory to another person.  I would recommend you write the verses out on an index card and carry it with you so you can be working on it during the day as well as have it on your nightstand for review before going to sleep.

  4. When we begin to engage in sexual sin, even the earliest part of the triggering process, what do you think the Spirit is doing at that moment.

  5. As soon as you realize that you are being tempted what do you think the Spirit’s response would be if you cried out to Him to help you?

  6. Write out below a simple prayer, in your own words, which you will begin to pray at every point you feel you are being tempted. Keep it short, simple and begin to use it today.  (Make a mental note of how many times you pray that prayer each day.  This will be a way of measuring your growth in recognizing and battling temptation.)

  1. Confession – Ask the Spirit if there are any sins you need to confess so that your fellowship with God will not be hindered today. Spend some time listening and whatever He brings to your mind thank the Lord that He has forgiven it by the shed blood of Christ.

Are you getting bored yet??? Doing the same things over and over again and twice a day? I know this is hard work.  It is not hard intellectually but in the repletion.  Here is what we are trying to do.  I am reminded of something called the 4 Stages of Competence.

 

  1. In the beginning we do not know what we do not know. We are Unconsciously Incompetent.

 

  1. As we gain knowledge, we become Consciously Incompetent – We know but do not put it into practice.

 

  1. As we begin to put into practice what we have learned we become Consciously Competent. Yet it still seems like a lot of work.

 

  1. The more we master these things we reach the goal of being Unconsciously Competent and we do what we need to be doing automatically

Day 6 – AM

 

  1. Worship – spend some time praying prayers of thanksgiving for what God wants to do in you. Some examples are …

 

  • Thank the Lord Jesus that it is His will for you to be sexually pure.
  • Thank Him that His Spirit dwells in you and that He has the power to transform you.
  • Thank Him that He is going to complete this work and you will be perfected.

 

  1. Confession – Like David prayed at the end of Psalm 139 – pray for the Lord to search you and see if there is any way that is unpleasing to Him in your life and talk                  with Him about that.

 

  1. Daily Prayers for Purity

 

  • Offer your body to God as a living sacrifice – (It may be of value to simply pray through Romans 12:1-2)
  • Ask the Spirit to fill you and to help you walk in the Spirit so that you do not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Ask Him to lead you throughout the day and to recognize whatever escapes He provides for you when temptation comes.

 

  • Pray on the Full Armor of God as listed in Ephesians 6:10-18

 

  • Pray that the Holy Spirit will give you strength to make the right choice when you are being tempted.
