The Third Daily Prayer – Preparing for Battle ~ blog

 In Daily Encouragement

So far, we have learned the how and why of daily offering our body to God as a living sacrifice and asking to be filled with and under the influence of the Holy Spirit. By these prayers, we are demonstrating our surrender of our life, our time, our body, and our resources to the Lord. We are granting Him permission to do or allow to happen whatever He has for us each day. This is the equivalent of obeying what Jesus said in Luke 9:23;

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves

and take up their cross daily

and follow me.”

It is the act of self-surrender asking the Lord to actually be the Lord in your life each day. Once we have given over the controls of our life to Him, we then are commanded to ask daily for the Spirit to fill us and guide us through the day.  We are taking the act of offering our body to Him and asking the Spirit to guide us and lead us through our day so that in all things we might be glorifying Him and not ourselves.

There is one more thing we desperately need to be doing each day if we want to be experiencing His will for our lives and that is preparing for the battle that awaits us every day. This battle is clearly taught in the Bible so let me summarize it and explain how to prepare to stand strong in the strength of His might and not be defeated again by our enemies.

All Christian men and women have 3 enemies.  The first enemy dwells inside of our body and is called our flesh or our sinful nature. Something inside of us that we were born with and it has been with us our entire life.  Our flesh is evil to the core and is not being sanctified by the Spirit.  We are being transformed…but our flesh is not.  James tells us that this is where our evil desires come from when we are tempted to sin;

“But each one is tempted when he is carried away

and enticed by his own lust.”

So, we have an enemy inside of us who has been with us all of our days and it has grown in power and the ability to carry us away and enticed. “Carried away to where?” we might ask.

Our flesh carries us away from being safe from temptation to a place of being enticed. It can happen in a split second if a sexual image pops up on our screen or anything that triggers our flesh to awaken and dopamine begins to be released in our brain. It can be a thought or memory and we all know temptation is just one click away.

In addition to this internal enemy we have an external enemy as we are taught in Ephesians 6:11-12;

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

This external enemy is the same one who tempted Jesus in the desert after 40 days of fasting. He is the fallen angel whose name is satan (lower case on purpose). This world is his domain and he has many other fallen angels he uses as well. In fact, the passage above lists 4 levels of demons. This should tell us that he is organized and has the equivalent of an army with 4 levels of rank. Those being the rulers, the powers, the world forces of this darkness, and the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. (Not in heaven, but in the upper atmosphere of this world.)

So, we face a powerful and organized army of demonic powers and their job is to lie around, resting in hammocks and sipping lemonade through a straw. That’s a lie in and of itself. They are real and are targeting us as believers to try to mess up our lives and fight against us becoming strong followers of Christ.

The deeper one becomes addicted to sexual behavior their work has succeeded and they can focus on someone else. However, decide that you want to stop any addition and you are going to have a battle on your hands.

We learn from the first chapter of Job that God is still over satan and restrains him from how much destruction he can get away with. We also know that greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world. And not just a little bit greater but infinitely greater and stronger. And we are sealed with the Spirit forever so even if we were to be tempted by satan himself the Spirit is there when we call out to Him for help.

However, not only do we have an internal enemy, our flesh, and an external enemy in demonic forces but another disadvantage we have is that we are behind enemy lines. We live in this world which is under to domain of satan and can also be working against us.  It is in this world that we are surrounded by temptations and thanks be to the internet and porn we can be watching anything we might desire in a matter of seconds from almost any location.

This is the position we find ourselves for the rest of our lives. Know this, that we have an internal enemy our flesh, and an external enemy the devil, and we live behind enemy lines in a world manipulated by satan…we are in danger and should be prepared to fight a battle against these enemies.

The Lord has not left us alone and ill-equipped for the battle in which we find ourselves. He himself faced this battle living as a man for about 33 years. Yet without sin. He has given us everything we need for life and godliness.

We have the Holy Spirit inside of our bodies.  We have the Scriptures so that we can know the truth if we are willing to learn it.  And we have the Church – which should be a community of believers helping one another. These three things are enough but alas, most Christians do not know how to walk in the Spirit; how to study, learn and meditate on the Scriptures; how to put on and use the full armor of God; and how to live in a community of other believers fighting the same battles but never asking for help for fear of exposure.

It is no wonder that so many Christian men are addicted to porn. We have been practicing social distancing all our lives. We have not allowed anyone, not even our spouses know the truth of our secret life of sexual sin. Tomorrow we will cover the full armor of God and how to use it daily so that we can stand strong in the strength of His mighty power.
