The Looting and Shooting in Your Own Life ~ blog
Are you ready for battle today? Do you have your gear on or are you going to walk around on the front lines in your pajamas and sipping some hot coffee? Maybe if you would realize that there has been some looting and shooting in your own life you would get serious about the need for the full armor of God.
Demonic powers are looting from you as you continue in sexual sin. They are stealing your joy and peace and leaving you living in shame, fear, and guilt. They have taken away your ability to experience true intimacy with God, your wife, your children, and your friends. And every day they are able to keep you on the A-Train…Alone, Afraid, and Ashamed, so, you will be no threat to them and of no help to others.
There has also been shooting and behold you are the one with the target on your back. The devil has been shooting his flaming arrows into your mind for years now. You have come to believe you are worthless and have been ejected out of the family of God. You are a worthless piece of crap that will never be used by God and so live in shame and feel sorry for yourself then medicate those feelings with more porn.
No, you don’t need the full armor of God every day. You are doing just fine. You believe you can have your porn and eat it too. Sexual sin is the secret sauce of your life. Those moments when your brain is pumping out dopamine, testosterone, oxytocin, serotonin, and norepinephrine (don’t worry about pronouncing these drugs). They are cocaine for your brain. And what starts their release in your head is porn and sexual thoughts. They are free, kind of. Available at a moment’s notice, and really are a very pleasant and powerful escape from reality.
The problem is they are not free, and you know that because you are reading or listening to this. They come with a serious cost. I know men who have lost it all because of their insatiable desires for porn and sex.
So, do you need to put on the full armor of God every day…like we are told in Ephesians 6?
“Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Listen, my friends, Paul is writing these words to all Christians not just to the sexually broken. We are not the only ones under attack. Every believer is in this battle whether they like it or not. I have prayed through these things almost every day for over 14+ years and am still doing it. In fact, as this ministry has grown, I need to do it even more consistently.
So, Saturday we learned about the belt of truth a critical piece of armor we need to wear every day. We need to tell the truth as well as know the truth. Now, most people think that means knowing the truth of the Word, but I don’t think so because the Word is the Sword of the Spirit. We need to know the truth about ourselves, our lives, our actions, and what is going on around us. The truth about my own actions and choices and how they affect everything that is part of my life.
Next, we have the breastplate of righteousness. Remember the piece of armor is a metaphor for what it does. The breastplate protects your vital organs. So, righteousness is very important in our battle. First, we have been given the righteousness of Christ. He has taken away the penalty for our sins and given to us His righteousness. How does that work in our everyday life? The answer is in the theme of Frozen 2 … and if you have not seen the film the theme is;
“Do the Next Right Thing”
How do I put on the breastplate of righteousness? When I am tempted, I tell myself to instead of falling into another sin I do the next RIGHT thing. Notice the word “do” meaning I take action in another direction instead of back into the darkness of sexual sin. What I do is anything good. Something that would be good for me or for someone else. Instead of drooling my way through some more porn, I am taking any action to help myself or someone else.
Then we are told to look at our shoes. Shoes help us to stand and stand means to take a position where you will hold your ground. You will stand strong against the lure of temptation. You will let others know that you are a follower of Christ and there are certain boundaries you are going to maintain. Not in some obnoxious way that makes others feel that you are better than they are but in a simple way telling them about Jesus as your Lord.
Next up is the shield of faith. For me, this has been the most important piece of armor because of all the lies I had been listening to for much of my life. So, how do we make our faith into a shield? We address the lies we are hearing with faith in what God says to be true and quoting it from the Scriptures has even more power.
For example, let’s say you have been thinking you have lost your salvation. How many times a day does that flaming arrow hit your brain? You have to counter with knowing what the Bible really says about your salvation and that it is an eternal decision that was made because God chose you before the creation of the world, and has adopted you into His family, and sealed you with the Spirit as the guarantee of your eternal life.
We were all once dead in our sins and separated from God, but we have been made alive in Christ and we are actually seated with Christ. Our spiritual position is already in heaven so when the lie comes you remind yourself of these truths and they become the shield to extinguish these pitiful flaming darts.
I will finish this up tomorrow. If you want a fuller interpretation where I deal with each piece of armor in a deeper way I do so in my devotional below 40 Days of Purpose. Just click the image.
