How to Put on the Belt of Truth ~ blog
I don’t know about you but in my life right now I feel I need to camp out in front of Jesus as He sits on the throne of grace so that I can receive the help I need for these days in which we are living. The events going on around the world with the devastation happening because of Covid-19. 1000 people in the USA died yesterday setting a new record.
Then added to that there is this whole mess that is happening politically. We are going to be bombarded from both Democrats and Republicans seeking to paint the opposite party as evil and out to destroy our nation. And I guarantee you this both sides have no conscience in using lies they would have you believe about those on the other side. Not exactly what those who wrote; “One Nation, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for All” had in mind.
So, can we stop for a bit and back away from the flood of controversy, race, and politics that is not going to be solved in November. I fear it will only intensify. Can we remember the words of Jesus when He said;
“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
I got a little sidetracked on my talking about how to put on the full armor of God to talk about us approaching the Lord to receive grace in our time of need. However, I want to get back to this truth that we are fighting a battle from two enemies. Our flesh that dwells within and demonic powers that are influencing our world and seeking to destroy us.
Paul has taught us;
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”
Disease, destruction, racism, corruption are all being orchestrated by the evil one. He rejoices in the destruction of people warring against one another. He desires pain and suffering for everyone and especially if you are a follower of Christ. Things are only going to get worse and if we are even going to stand a chance of not only surviving the onslaughts but being “more than conquerors” we MUST be daily putting on the Full Armor of God.
I know you probably know the 6 pieces of armor Paul writes about in Ephesians but let’s remind ourselves of what they are;
“Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
For years I have been praying through that passage literally saying exactly what those words are. This was essential for my recovery because it helped me stand strong in the strength of His Might against my daily enemies. But we should not just pray through them without understanding what they are supposed to actually do and how we are to literally use them.
These pieces of armor are metaphors telling us something about the word that is connected to them. For example, how do we actually put on the belt of truth? I do not have a belt in my closet or around my waist with the word’s truth printed on it. Just as the belt was essential to the Roman soldier’s armor…truth is essential to our battle against the father of lies.
So, to be actually using this belt of truth we must do two things. We must know the truth and we must tell the truth. I don’t care what belt you have around your waist wearing the belt of truth is telling the truth and knowing the truth. Now almost everybody immediately thinks that means I need to know the Word of God because God’s Word, the Bible, is the truth. True, but Paul is going to specifically identify the Word of God as the sword of the Spirit.
I believe he means we need to be understanding what truth is and what is not true. Never before in the history of mankind is this more important to know the truth about ourselves and our world because we are being bombarded all the time with information and news. Who is telling the truth? Pick any source of news you like and every one of them has an agenda and will spin the news according to their desired result.
Is the truth in there somewhere? Maybe yes and maybe no. Knowing the truth takes time to determine what really is true and what are lies. Are you deciding that on your own by looking at both sides of the issue or because you have been spoon-fed the ideas which will lead you to a conclusion that might be right or might be wrong?
Knowing the truth takes work and everyone has their own agenda. Thanks to social media journalistic integrity is an idea that was tossed out a long time ago. Now it is all sound bites and personal spin. People do not have to prove what they are saying is true. They can say whatever they want to say, and it becomes instantly available for all the world to see…thank you internet. It is the World Wide Web…unfortunately it is often a web of deceit.
Then we are to be telling the truth. This is so critical to all of our recoveries. Many of us have lied to ourselves, friends, and family for years about our struggle with sexual sin. Truth is no longer protecting us, and lies come far too easily.
That is why the first step in the 180 Recovery Program videos is to create your sexual sin inventory. We help men create the list of as many of their sexual sins as possible, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, and then confess them to someone you can trust, and you know loves you. Then burn it. I call it taking out the garbage.
And by the way, if you ever want to begin to rebuild trust with others it has to be built ln them knowing that you are telling them the truth. It will not be your words but your actions and seeing change in you by the Holy Spirit.
Know the Truth and Tell the Truth – step 1 of putting on the full armor of God.
