Who Will be Your Master Today? ~ blog
Every day we have choices we make and decisions we face. Some are simple, like am I going to get up when the alarm goes off? Or will I hit the snooze button, or just flat out go back to sleep because it is Saturday. I only have about 20 things I need to do today, but since my motto is “Don’t put off to Tomorrow what you can put off to the Day after Tomorrow.” I might sleep in for as long as possible.
For some of us older gentlemen, we have a different alarm clock. It is called our bladder and you reach a point where it tells you when to get up, perhaps several times a night. I went through that for about a year until I went to visit Dr. Rotor Rooter who determined that I needed to have my exit valve drilled open again which he did…problem solved…but I digress.
Choices, some are so insignificant that we make the decisions almost automatically and thanks to the muscle memory and wired connections in our brains we can accomplish what is needed with little or no significant thought.
Unfortunately, one of those decisions that has become hard-wired in our brains is to choose to escape the stress and pain of life by using porn and masturbation. And when we have been doing that for years it becomes almost automatic. Plus, having all the kinds of porn we are especially desiring available in a matter of seconds it has just become too easy and automatic to get our fix almost any time and anywhere.
It becomes something we turn to quickly and easily because it is a great escape and takes our minds off our problems, grabs our attention with power, and brings us to a climax of pleasure that is easily disposed of and off we go feeling calmness from the serotonin flooding our brain.
Here is the problem. This behavior is highly addictive and will take you to a place where suddenly your marriage is at stake, your health is threatened by STDs, and you become a slave to your own sexual desires. Those desires become insatiable and you find yourself staying up later and later, feeling a deep and growing shame, and are easily manipulated by the enemy of your soul who just wants to destroy your life.
So, you try to stop. For how many years or decades have you been trying to stop? If insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result…then perhaps you are insane, or at least acting like it on occasion.
Might I suggest a different approach? Let’s go back to the beginning of each day. Back to where you have to make a decision at the very beginning of your day. And that decision is to not just get up and launch into your normal routine of getting to work, doing your job, spending time with your family over dinner, and then wasting yourself away NetFlixing yourself into another coma. Another 16 hours of going through the same motions with little satisfaction or feelings of accomplishment.
What if you being to see your life as something that has a purpose from God and that He is right there with you, actually in you by the Holy Spirit. You begin to realize that you are His representative to all those around you. And that the things you do, the words you speak, and the thoughts you think are important and have consequences either for today or in the future.
You remind yourself that God is not against you but is 1000% for you. He screams this from the cross to show you the extent of His love. He has promised to NEVER leave you or abandon you even after the long history you have with sexual sin and even your future fumbling’s.
So, you make time in the morning to add a new routine to your schedule. A time that just might make the rest of your day go far better than it will by ignoring it. You go and in a quiet place where you will be undisturbed, and you do what God has told all of us we need to do in order to experience Him throughout your day.
You obey what we are commanded to do in Romans 12:1-2;
“Therefore, I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Then, once you have surrendered yourself and your body to God ask Him to take control of your day by asking for the filling of the Holy Spirit. This is another command we are told to do continuously in Ephesians 5:18;
“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit…”
To be filled with the Spirit is to allow yourself to be under the influence of the Spirit. Instead of having alcohol causing you to think, do, and say stupid things that only create trouble, you are asking the Spirit to fill you and to continue to fill you as you go through your day.
Finally, as we spend last week studying…you put on the full armor of God so that you can stand strong in the strength of His might.
If you are not doing these three things at the beginning of your day do not expect that in some magically way you will be able to stop a habit or addiction that you have been working on for years if not decades.
God is 1000% for you. God has purchased you and your body out of sin and into His eternal family. God is literally dwelling inside of your body and wants to free you from sexual addictions.
So, what is missing? You are still alone and trying to stop on your own. Sorry to say that is not going to happen. Just look at your past and it is telling you that.
