Top 10 Truths # 2 – You Have Been Given the Gift of Eternal Life ~ blog
We all know what a gift is do we not. A gift is something that is given to you that does not cost you anything. If you must pay something for it then it is no longer a gift but a purchase. A paycheck is not a gift because you are being paid for what you have worked. It is a wage and not a gift.
That ridiculous tie you received on Christmas is a gift. Someone bought it for you and gave it to you. Even though you may never wear it or use it to tie your tomato plants to a stick it is still and always be a gift.
Top Truth # 1, we learned yesterday, is that God has always loved you, is loving you now, and will always love you. His love for all of us is unconditional. We are not told why God chose to love us. It was not because He knew ahead of time what wonderful Christians we would be. In fact, the opposite is true. He knew before the creation of the world all the sins that we would ever do, think, and say…and loved us anyway.
Which is why we read in Ephesians 2:4-9;
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Religions tell people how to earn their salvation. For the Christian salvation is the gift of God and not even possible to earn by works…so that God gets all the glory.
Truth # 2 – You Have Been Given the Gift of Eternal Life – Your salvation is the gift God has for you because of Truth # 1 – He Loves You.
This truth is # 2 on my list because almost everyone who has become addicted to sexual sin begins to doubt that they have lost their salvation. This is completely normal because it does not make sense to us that God would love us unconditionally and that our eternal life becomes something we must maintain by our obedience and good works. It is the old “scratch my back and I will scratch yours” way of thinking. You do for me and I will do for you is an agreement between two parties…a kind of tit for tat or quid pro quo deal.
Listen, because of God’s unconditional love for you, given to you despite the person you end up being, addicted to porn, His love for you never changes and the reality of His gift of your eternal life is not on the line. It is a done deal. It is signed, sealed by the Holy Spirit, and delivered to you the moment you put your faith in Jesus and were born again.
How can I say that it is impossible for a person who has been chosen by God to receive the free gift of salvation to be able to lose that gift? Because the gift of eternal salvation is truly a free gift that God has given to you and will never take it away because of what you may or may not choose to do. He knew all of that before He chose you and He chose you anyway!
Here is part of the problem that all of us who have become addicted to porn and or sex have to deal with and why we end up doubting our salvation. We are part of the Christian community who believes that the Bible is the Word of God and is true. The Bible clearly says that God hates sexual immorality and we are to stay away from it.
However, at the same time, we have developed an addiction to sexual sin because the entire act of being sexually aroused by porn or thoughts in our minds is highly addictive. So, we are part of this community that says it is wrong but internally we are addicted and cannot seem to break free so there is this tremendous tension between what we believe and what we do.
And as this becomes a part of our lives, beginning around the age of 12, and has continued in increasing degrees…we identify ourselves as sex addicts who are therefore must be condemned by God for our failure to maintain a life of purity.
However, your salvation is not a result of our works. Our works and efforts to be godly and Christlike men have failed miserably and we begin to buy the lie that God is finished with us.
That is a bald-faced lie. We never have and never will be saved by our works. But you might say;
“Well, doesn’t my failure to not stop looking at porn
indicate I am not born again?”
Well…it might…but it actually indicates that you are in a battle for your life against the world, the flesh, and the devil and you are failing to do anything God’s has given to you to be able to fight this battle. You are isolated out of shame and fear. You have taught your brain and body that you will relieve stress with porn and masturbation and now they demand it more and more as life goes on.
Stop identifying yourself as a porn or sex addict. That is not who you are. Yes, it may be what you have become addicted to doing but it is not your identity. You are a person whom God has loved and chosen before the creation of the world and He has given to you the absolutely free gift of salvation…so that you are now born again and a new creation in Christ.
We all used to be dead in our sins and transgressions. However, by the grace and mercies of God, we have gone from being dead in our sins to being alive in Christ. We are new creations because God decided to give us the GIFT of eternal life. And in order for that to happen, God, Himself chose to give us the gift of faith and grace so that we can be saved and now have the gift of eternal life.
If you did not do anything to earn your salvation
then you cannot do anything to lose your salvation!
And just to make sure you understand that reality of your salvation, God has sealed you with His Holy Spirit which is Truth # 3 and we will look at that tomorrow.
