Top Ten Truths # 3 – You Are a New Creation in Christ ~ blog

 In Daily Encouragement

What do we normally see when a sports team wins the championship game? In a word, it is a celebration. They began the year going to a training camp with everyone wanting to earn a starting position. Everyone is on the team because they love their sport and the chance to compete and have proven that they are one of the best.

What comes with winning the championship game, or series is notoriety, fame, and if a professional sport…lots of money. Have you ever noticed that nobody who is just on the team and sitting on the bench is interviewed after the big win? That conversation would be a little awkward.

Announcer – “Hey Bob you did a great job sitting on the bench today. What has been the secret of your success?

Bob – “Well, I show up late for practice. I slack off during drills and skip the weight room on a regular basis.”

Announcer – “Well that sure shows based on your performance. We noticed you seemed to be snacking during the game. Were those chips you were attacking during the whole game?

Bob – “No, they were pork rinds! Lots of salt, fat, and crunch. They get me through a tough game. By the way did our team win?”

However, whether one plays in the big game or not if their team wins, they are a member of that Championship Team. They get the T-shirt, the cap, and the ring. They ride in the parade and their name is recorded in history with every other player.

I talk with and receive emails from so many Christians who feel they have been relegated to sitting on the bench or even let go from the team because of their addiction to porn and sexual sin. They feel so distant from God. They might have gone through a divorce because of their failures in marriage and so they feel like they have failed in their faith and God has traded them to the other team.

What you are feeling is powerful and defeating so we all need to remember this truth no matter how far we have fallen away from the Lord.

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17;

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Whether you want to believe it or not this is true of you if you have been born again by the Spirit and have placed your faith in Christ to be your Savior. You believe that He died for your sins and rose again from the dead and His Spirit now dwells in your body.

So, what exactly does it mean that we are new creations…that we have been born again by the Spirit as Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3? It is a huge deal and far greater than anything you can imagine. If we view it from our perspective on the outside it does not seem like all that much. We have a time where we feel forgiven and that we now have peace with God. We begin to go to church more regularly, or for the first time.

However, after a while, it seems like the newness of our being a new creation has worn off and we are back turning to porn and masturbation to deal with our stress and escape our problems.

So, let’s look at another passage that makes clearer what has happened to us now that we have been born again and are now a new creation in Christ. Ephesians 2:4-7;

“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.”

Wow…there is a tremendous amount of powerful truth in those 4 verses. Notice these major points that Paul makes.

# 1 – It is because of God’s “great love” for us and His mercy that we have been made alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins.

# 2 – God has raised us up with Christ (note the past tense) and has seated us with Christ in the heavenly realms. This is spiritual truth even though we are still here physically.

# 3 – Eventually He will show us the incomparable riches of His grace expressed to us in His kindness in Christ Jesus.

In one sense every believer is seated on the bench with Christ in the heavenly realms. We are champions because of the new life God has given to us. And why pray tell has God done all this for us?

“Because of His great Love for Us!”

I urge you to be reminding yourself of the 3 tremendous truths we have learned so far, every day so that you are living in the truth of the Word of God and not believing the lies of our enemy.

Stop living in your self-loathing and self-condemnation and start reminding yourself of what is true about you and always will be.
