Top Truth # 4 – You are Sealed by the Holy Spirit ~ blog
This fourth Top Truth literally blows my mind. We have become so used to knowing it but have barely scratched the surface on what it can mean for us especially in overcoming our struggle with porn and sexual brokenness.
From the Old Testament we learn the idea that the Spirit came upon certain people at certain times but in the example of Saul…He also left him because of his sin. However, Jesus is the first to give His disciples and us this idea of the Holy Spirit actually dwelling inside of our bodies. Notice how He says it in John 14 and 16.
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth…”
Jesus had just shocked His disciples on their last night together while celebrating the Passover Meal. He has told them that He was going away and they would not be able to remain with Him. Which was clearly the worst news they were not wanting to hear. However, He tells them that the Father will give them “another” Helper.
This word “another” is an exact word and does not mean to us what it meant to them. This usage of the word “another” means another of the exact same kind. Completely equal to Him which can only mean one thing. That the one who will replace Jesus in their presence will be the exact same kind of Helper that Jesus has been. Fully God and fully able to help them as Jesus has been helping them. And oh, by the way…this Helper will be with them forever.
Then in the very next verse, Jesus says;
“…that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.”
Jesus has just told His disciples that the Holy Spirit who is equal to God the Father and God the Son would be with them forever AND He will actually be in them as opposed to being with them as Jesus had been. So, whether they are all together or separated from one another they would all still have instant access to the Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of Christ.
Therefore, never again would they be separated from the presence of God. Never again would they find themselves alone and isolated because in this new administration God would literally be dwelling inside of their body. Which is why Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 6:
“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore, glorify God in your body.”
So, the Holy Spirit lives inside of our bodies. He is equal to Jesus and so having the Spirit in us is the same as saying we have Christ in us…literally dwelling inside of our body. Which is why Paul writes to the Galatians in Galatians 2:20;
“I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”
So, your body is a temple in which the Holy Spirit dwells and He will be in you forever. He is always there no matter where you are or what you are doing. Now here is the $64 million-dollar question;
It means that all of us always have access to God and we have the presence and power of the Spirit to help us in our recovery. This is because of the darkness and shame that goes with being sexually broken we begin to think that God has abandoned us. He is disgusted with us and has turned His back on us because our constant cries for help seem to be going unnoticed and unanswered.
But that is not true no matter how bad you feel because your feelings are wrong, and you are believing lies. I know this is true because of Ephesians 1:13-14;
“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”
To be sealed in those days meant that someone has put on you their mark of ownership. It was something permanent and unable to be changed. You and I have been sealed with the Holy Spirit and He, being in us forever, guarantees that we will receive our inheritance in heaven.
However, there is something even more important than that relative to the Holy Spirit and our struggle with sexual sin. His job in us in the here and now is to empower us to walk in the Spirit so that we are not fulfilling the desires of our flesh. He is in us to not only escort us to heaven but to transform us in the process.
And it is in our actions of daily yielding ourselves and our bodies to Him, asking for His filling and enabling us to walk in the Spirit that we can be being transformed into more Christ-like men and experiencing His fruit of self-control.
God is not only with you, but He is in you and daily waits for you to turn over the keys of your life and allow Him to influence you during the struggles and temptations of every day. If we make it our daily priority to offer God our body as a living sacrifice, ask the Spirit to fill and empower us, and are putting on the full armor of God that we can begin to experience His power enabling us to do what we have proven that we cannot do on our own.
We need daily this powerful presence of the Holy Spirit and living our lives in a community of other men struggling with the same thing in order to begin experiencing the freedom God desires us to have.
