Are You Feeding Your Soul? ~ blog

 In Daily Encouragement

God has so wonderfully programmed our bodies so that we are made aware of what is going on inside of us so that we take the actions necessary to resolve the situation. When we need fluids, we feel thirsty. Not the “time to watch football so let’s have some beer” kind of thirst, but more the “I just finished mowing the lawn and I need some iced tea or ice water” kind of thirst.

When we are tired, we sleep. When we are hungry, we eat. When we are horny, we seek some kind of sexual release. Now, thanks to the internet, we can feed our sexual desires in a matter of minutes. The process in and of itself is exciting. Just as we can now have fast food delivered to our door or picked up with our car, we can have any kind of sexual delight in front of our eyes in a matter of seconds.

Food and drink come with limits or should. Some people can consume way more food than others but when it comes to porn the tendency is to find more variety with more frequency. The desire becomes an addiction and can consume more and more of your time. For some people, it becomes a compulsion, and instead of one consuming the porn…the porn is consuming them. It consumes your time and your energy to the extent that other areas of your life do not receive the attention they need or deserve, and we find we have a major problem.

There is one thing I believe we all need to start paying attention to and that is our soul. Not the sole like that bottom of your foot or shoe but the soul that is within you. You are born with it and it will continue to live in you forever…no matter where your eternal destination may be. It will not die with the body. It is eternal just like your spirit. The soul and spirit are eternal. It is our existing body that is temporary in its present form but will be replaced with an eternal one.

So, what would you say it the condition of your soul? Is it malnourished? I would be willing to bet that it is. Just as our body reacts to a lack of fluids and we become thirsty our soul has a thirst as well. Giving our body food and water are absolute necessities…feeding and quenching the thirst of our soul…not so much.

In Psalm 42 we read these incredible words;

“As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
My tears have been my food
day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”

So, what is your soul telling you? After years of your flesh consuming garbage dumps of porn, driving you back to it and back to it over and over again. Yet the flesh seems to be never satisfied or satiated.  You find yourself wanting more not soon thereafter and you know it is a bottomless pit you are trying so unsuccessfully to fill. And the more you consume the hungrier it gets pushing you to new depths of depravity…and you hate yourself for it.

There is another Psalm that speaks about our soul which David wrote in Psalm 23;

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
     He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
     He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.”

Porn addicts find themselves in garbage dumps, The Shepherd’s sheep find green pastures. Those who feed the flesh find a continual thirst for more which never fulfills. While the Lord’s sheep are grazing beside still waters running cool and deep. Addicts live with an agonizing and unsettled life. While the children of God are having their souls restored and are being led down paths of righteousness because that is what He really wants for us…righteousness.

So how does one find this place with an abundance of green grass and still waters? How can porn addicts experience the Lord restoring our souls? Are we doomed to live with these unquenchable desires for the rest of our lives? Is it impossible to become unentangled from the sin that so easily has entangled us?  No, it is absolutely not impossible.  It is not easy as you well know but the secret is found in the first 5 words of this psalm.

“The Lord IS my Shepherd…”

Just as one can develop an appetite for anything one can develop an appetite for allowing the Lord to be one’s Shepherd.  And the question is not; “Is the Lord the Good Shepherd?” He is as He said He is and told that to His disciples. The real question is; “Is He Your Shepherd and are you remaining in the flock?

If you have trusted Christ to be your Savior from your sins, then He is Your Shepherd. However, as one of His sheep are you AWOL or MIA? AWOL is being Absent Without Leave. You have gone off base without permission. You have left the green pasture and the still waters only to find yourself roaming around the garbage dump of sexual sin. Or you are Missing in Action…not taking the actions God has for you to have your soul restored?

So, you find your soul panting for water. Your isolation has allowed you to pretend you are a well-nourished believer when in reality you have become addicted to porn and sexual sin.

There is a solution…and you know what it is but do not want to do it. Your soul used to be like a nice plump grape that has become a withered-up raisin.

So, let me ask you straight forward? Would you like to change that? I mean seriously take the steps to have your soul restored by the Good Shepherd. He is an expert at it. He has done it in my life and wants to do it in yours as well.

I’ll go into the details tomorrow…
