If you are wanting a simple answer to this issue let me tell you right up front as one who has battled with this for 55 years, has been in recovery for over 15 years, and have been working with Christians using the Bible as my guide as well as having read widely on the subject…
There Normally are no Easy Fixes or Simple Answers!
Yes, I can believe that God can and has delivered people from all kinds of addictions. He is almighty and can do anything. I have heard of some men whom God has healed or delivered from the sexual sins of their past…yet still find themselves being tempted and occasionally struggling.
Let me begin by addressing the obvious. As long as we are alive here on earth and still breathing and taking nourishment, we have 3 realities that are true for all of us.
We are still living in a fallen world where porn is omnipresent and sexual temptation abounds.
We still have our sinful nature or flesh inside of us and it has power to influence our decisions and loves to lure us away and entice us with sexual sin.
We still have demonic forces working against us. Our battle is not with flesh and blood but against the demonic forces of darkness.
I know that sounds really pessimistic however, those are the realities we learn from the Bible and I believe them to be true for all believers.
However, the good news is all 3 of these factors are only temporary. We are going to be completely delivered from the world, our flesh, and the devil when we die. Our flesh is destroyed along with our physical body. We are removed from the fallen world and taken to heaven where there is no temptation or sin. And there ain’t no demonic forces in heaven and never will be.
Paul says it in Philippians 1:6;
“For I am confident of this very thing,
that He who began a good work among you
will complete it by the day of Christ Jesus.”
Remember Paul is writing under the direction of the Holy Spirit and so these words are true and in line with so many others that talk about our eternal future in heaven. There is an eternal life in heaven where we will never ever be tempted by sin again or have to deal with demonic forces.
So, when we think about this battle that all of us are in and how difficult it is to fight it day after day after day. We must know that it is temporary and, in the end…we win!!! So, this struggle is temporary if you look at the whole picture of our eternal life.
I know that is not much comfort to you because we are living in the here and now and our issues are confronting us daily if not multiple times a day. It does not make any sense that our Father who loves us completely, our Lord who died to pay for all of our sins, and the Holy Spirit who literally dwells inside of our body…that they do not want to help us in this daily battle. They do and they really do want to help us.
Notice what Peter writes in 2 Peter 1:3;
“His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.”
And Paul writes in 2 Timothy 3:16;
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Plus, we know for certain that it is God’s will for us to live a sexually pure life from 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4;
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor…”
So, the first thing we need to fully understand and have faith in is that it is God’s will for us to live holy lives and that He has given us everything we need for this to happen. However, after years and years of struggling and failing over and over again, it makes sense to me that many of you are doubting God’s love for you and His willingness to help you because you have gone to Him over and over again and nothing seems to change.
Where do you think the problem lies in this reality? As someone who was seriously addicted for 8 plus years I know for certain, at least for me, the problem did not exist with God. The problem was me and my refusal to do what God’s Word was telling me to do and so I came to this conclusion;
God has done everything I need for Him to do in order for me to live a sexually pure life. His will is for me to live a pure and holy life. He even has sealed me with the Holy Spirit, so I am connected to Him and He is connected to me every second of my life. Plus, He has given me through His Word the truths I need to KNOW AND DO so that I can live a pure life.
This is the first lesson on deliverance. God wants us to live sexually pure lives. God has given us everything we need for this to happen. But for all of us, this is a battle that we are not learning to win. The problem lies with us and not with God…but we can change, and we can be changed…and ultimately we will be holy and perfect forever in heaven.
Next week I am going to go into the things we all need to be doing for us to begin freedom from sexual sin and find that abundant life Jesus told us He has for us.
Until then continue to offer your body to God as a living sacrifice. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and enable you to walk in the Spirit, and daily put on the full armor of God!
