FINALLY!!! How to be Daily Walking in the Spirit ~ blog

I wanted to finish up this series on the Holy Spirit today.  I sincerely hope that it has been helpful to you because the Holy Spirit is the only one who can transform us from being addicted to porn and sex to walking in freedom from sexual brokenness. You may not believe that, but I and many others are experiencing it. However, it takes consistent work.

The Holy Spirit is literally God dwelling inside of you. The all-powerful, all-wise, and all-knowing Spirit of God has entered you and your body is not His Temple. He will never leave you or forsake you.  You are sealed with Him as a deposit of the inheritance you will receive when you step into Heaven.

This truly should blow our minds. And yet we go on day by day sometimes ignoring Him completely.  He is our greatest untapped resource.  It is like we have won the lottery, put the money in a bag, and buried it in our backyard…not spending a dime yet believing we are still poor and God has forgotten us.  So, here is how we can and must learn to tap into His unlimited resources.

First – Begin Every Day Surrendering to Him – We are commanded in Ephesians 5:18 to be being filled continuously as we are going through our day.  To accomplish that we need to begin every day asking the Spirit to fill us.  By that I mean we are offering our bodies and the members of our bodies to Him for Him to use as instruments of Righteousness.

“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” (Romans 6:12-14)

Daily offering your body to God (Romans 12:1) and the members of your body to God as a living sacrifice is a daily offering so that you can be used by God as an instrument of righteousness. Ask the Spirit to fill you and to empower you so that He is leading you through your day and is guiding you in the decisions you make. Being filled with the Spirit is asking and allowing Him to guide and influence you through your day.

Second – Walk in the Spirit Moment by Moment – I realize that you cannot focus on the Spirit completely through the day.  Whether you drive an 18-wheeler, operate a fork-lift, sell merchandise, or play sports your mind needs to be attentive to what you are doing at that moment.  And it is not in those moments that you are usually facing temptation unless you are a waiter in a strip-club…which you should not be for obvious reasons.

It is in the daily moments of temptation that we need to be walking in the Spirit.  It is in that triggering moment, whatever and whenever it might be, that we need to look to the Spirit for our means of escape.  God promises us He will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can resist and will provide a way of escape.  So, in our mind, we need to shift gears away from what is triggering us and ask the Spirit to empower us to walk in Him through that time of temptation and to flee if need be by taking direct action away from the source of temptation.

Third – Sometimes the Spirit May Not Be Enough – Say What??? That’s right.  Sometimes we have become so good at ignoring the Spirit, not listening to His advice and directions, or allowing the rebelliousness of our flesh to caused His voice to grow faint that we need the community of another person or group of people who can step in and be there with us.

Who said that the battle of temptation is something we should be fighting on our own?  I know who…satan tells us that.  He challenges us to step up and be a man.  We do not need anybody and can handle this on our own…really??? Where has that strategy gotten us?  Addictionville, falling over and over again for years and feeling great shame so that we will keep our mouths shut and suffer endless failures instead of calling out to our brothers and sisters in Christ for help!

If we are obeying His advice of living our lives in a community of other believers where we are getting the love and support we need then we can begin defeating temptations one at a time because we will have others with us.  A lone sheep is a dead sheep.  Or as one of my friends says; “A lone sheep is a pork chop!”

How many times will we keep falling and losing this battle, putting our lives, our marriages, our families, and our Christian reputation on the line? We all need to begin to ask for help not only from the Spirit but from our community who will drop what they are doing and give you a call. Or, who will receive your text as an SOS, and begin praying you on the spot?

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

We all daily need to be being filled with and walking in the Spirit 24/7.  And we also need to be daily connected to a community of others who have been comforted in their affliction and who can comfort us who are struggling with the comfort which they have received from God. And then we will be able to comfort others as well.

Recovery is both Receiving and Giving!

This is at the heart of true Christian community.  Being comforted when we need it and then comforting others when they need it.  Growing strong in your recovery by being helped and then helping others become stronger in their recovery…this is the missing link in so many who are failing to escape their sexual addiction.

This is why 180 Ministries has 15 Online Support Teams with over 180 men receiving weekly accountability, daily support, and learning from the Bible the answers we need to learn about how to walk in purity and the consistency to do it every day…one day at a time.

Please email me if you would like to sit in one of these OSTs as my guest to see how they are helping one another and bearing one another’s burdens. I would like to add 5 more OSTs this year so perhaps we could launch one together.
