What Happened at the Moment Your Salvation Began? ~ blog

 In Daily Encouragement

There are things we learn from the Bible that if we were not told them we would never know them. We have learned a number of truths in Ephesians 1. We would never have been able to know that before the creation of the world God already loved us and chose us to be adopted as one of His children.

We never received any papers from Heaven’s Adoption Agency telling us that God has adopted us to be one of His Children and He redeemed us and has forgiven us all of our sins through the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross.

However, these next two parts of this run-on sentence in Ephesians 1 should blow our minds. It is something that sounds too good to be true and does not even seem like it could be possible. But it is true and no matter how horrible you feel about yourself for becoming addicted to porn and sex it is still a part of your reality whether you realize it or not. So, get ready because here it comes…

“In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise…”

Do you remember the moment when you believed in Jesus? Perhaps at that time, you heard someone tell you the gospel. It might have been a preacher pointing his long and boney index finger at you and scaring you about the hell awaiting you…that it was time to turn or burn. Or it was someone you knew who told you about what happened to them when they got saved. Or maybe you were raised in a family of people who loved the Lord and as a child, you believed.

Whenever it was somehow you heard the message of truth about Christ dying for your sins and rising from the dead. You heard the gospel, and something happened. You became aware that you were a sinful person who had done sinful things and you wanted to be saved. You wanted forgiveness from God.

However, you not only heard the message of truth, the gospel of salvation but you took the next step and you believed.  You believed that Jesus died to pay the penalty for all of your sins. You believed that He loved you and He died for you. Many people hear but do not believe. For whatever reason…I do not know and no need to speculate if either they could not accept they were sinful, did not feel the need for a Savior, or just did not want to allow God into their life.

However, for you and for me…when we heard the gospel, knowing that we needed a Savior, we believed. To believe something means we accept it as being true. Every time you sit on a chair you transfer your weight from your two legs onto the four legs of the chair…believing that the chair will hold you up. And in that motion of sitting you pass a point of no return where you could not go back to standing on your legs because of gravity but you do not even think about it because you have sat thousands of times before.

When you HEARD the Gospel…you BELIEVED. When it was made clear to you that Jesus, who was God in the flesh, willfully allowed Himself to be sacrificed on the Cross as THE payment for all of your sins and you wanted that to be true in your life…you BELIEVED. And you went from being dead in your sins and separated from God to being born again, becoming a new creation alive in Christ, and forever a member of God’s family.

All that transpired at that moment even if you cannot remember when you did that if you were a child. I was 19 when I believed. I do not know the exact time or day, but I do remember it was the fall of 1972 and I was in my apartment J-203 in Devin Shire Apartments in Pennsylvania in my sophomore year of college.

I was alone in my room laying on my bed. I had a ruptured disc in my back causing me immense pain. I overheard someone sharing the gospel with one of my roommates earlier that day. Suddenly, I felt the conviction of the sinful life I was living, and I realized that I needed a Savior. I needed Jesus. I wanted and needed forgiveness and I gave my life over to Jesus, inviting Him to be my Savior.

It was a powerful and emotional moment. I did not even know why I was crying but I was. However, they were tears of joy because I literally felt the blood of Christ washing away my sins and instead of sensing a great distance between God and myself, I felt love and embraced by Jesus who, at that moment, became my Savior and I was forgiven for all my sins.

What I did not know happened was probably the most important thing. I was sealed in Christ with the Holy Spirit. I was marked…sealed…branded so to speak. A seal was made on me by God with the Holy Spirit. He literally came inside of my body and He remains there today. He is not a mark I can rub off or a tattoo I can tattoo over again. He did not come onto my body like a new layer of skin cream.

No, the Holy Spirit of God literally entered into my body…and yours. Just to make this clear we read in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20…

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”

The moment you believed in Jesus you were sealed in Jesus with the Holy Spirit. Jesus told his disciples this would happen to them. The Spirit would come and not only be with them but be in them…and be in them forever!!! Read John 14:16 and see so for yourself.

This has powerful implications for us both in the present day and for eternity which we will look at tomorrow. However, understand this and I do not care how addicted to porn and sex you might be even if you are falling multiple times a day. If you have believed in Jesus to be your Savior you are even still sealed with the Spirit. He still remains inside your body and He is the key to ending your addiction to porn because He and He alone can transform you into a man who desires sexual purity more than you desire sexual sin.
