Why I Believe You Can Never Lose Your Salvation ~ blog

 In Daily Encouragement

If there is one main fear that I hear from Christians who have become addicted to porn it is they live in fear that their continuing in sin has cost them their salvation. Or to put it another way the idea of one being “once saved always saved” is heresy and they have a number of passages to seem to back that up.

So, can we agree on this…both positions cannot be true? Someone is either pregnant or not pregnant. You either have Covid 19 or you do not have it. Now I am not going to write an email addressing this issue theologically. We are coming to the end of a passage in Ephesians 1, the longest run-on sentence in the Bible, and Paul, under the direction of the Holy Spirit writes this…

“In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.”

In just a few more verses Paul is going to teach us that we are saved by grace through faith and that the grace and faith we had were given to us by God. The “gift” that saves us is the faith we needed and the grace of God…and then it explicitly says

“not by works so that no one may boast.”

Yesterday we learned that being “sealed” was a mark of ownership. We were all sealed in Him (Christ) with the Holy Spirit. Just as Jesus promised His disciples that it would be BETTER for them that He goes to heaven because then the Spirit would be sent, and the Spirit would be able to not only be WITH them, but He would be IN them…forever.

See it for yourself in John 14:16…

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you FOREVERyou know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.”

So, the Spirit was already WITH them because Jesus was filled with the Spirit but Jesus says that the Spirit will be IN them…which we read happened in Acts 2.

So, let’s put these thoughts together. Jesus promised to His disciples that He was going to leave them which was a pretty dramatic shock since they had left everything to follow Him. However, He tells them that it will be better for them because the Spirit will come to take His place and the Spirit would not only be able to be with the group of them…but He would be able to be in each one of them. Whether they were together as a team or separated from one another…the Spirit would be right there inside each of them.

Now Paul is following up on this idea by teaching us that the moment we believed the Holy Spirit came into us. In fact, he says we are “sealed in Him” (sealed in Christ) by the Holy Spirit. So, He not only comes into us but we are sealed in Christ by the Spirit. And the idea of being sealed is to show ownership…that God owns us, not as slaves but as His children…remember He adopted us into being His sons and daughters.

Now listen carefully because this next part is very important. It tells us that the Spirit, who has sealed us in Christ…is given as a…

“…pledge of our inheritance…”

This word pledge is a word that means a promise. Today we use an engagement ring as a pledge that the man is going to marry the woman. The ring is a symbol of his pledge…some call it a promissory ring. It is also the same word we use when we put down a down payment as a promise that we are going to purchase a house. It becomes a pledge or promissory note of our intention to buy the property.

No putting this all together we learn some very wonderful truth. The moment we believed in Jesus as a result of God giving us the grace and faith to believe we were immediately sealed in Christ by the Holy Spirit entering our body where He will remain until we enter heaven to receive the conclusion of our salvation process.

When I bought the house in which we currently live in we made a down payment. A check for two thousand dollars was given and put into an escrow account as our promise to follow through and buy the house. Percentage-wise it was less than 1% of the price of the home but it was enough for the sellers to believe we were going to follow through and finish the purchase. It was our promissory note.

The Holy Spirit is God’s engagement ring to us. It is His down payment guaranteeing our inheritance in heaven. And it is far greater than 1%. The Spirit is 33% of the entire Godhead. God the Father has sealed us in Christ by sealing us with the Spirit and the Holy Spirit is God the Father’s promise that we are forever His children and we will most definitely receive our eternal inheritance when we die and go to heaven.

There will not be some huge judgment taking place to see if we are worthy to enter heaven. We never have been worthy and never can be worthy. God the Father has chosen you before the foundation of the world and in love has already adopted you to be his daughter or son. The Son of God has paid the full price for all of your sins and redeemed us all from being dead in our sins and separated from God.

And to seal the deal…we are all sealed in Christ by the Spirit to guarantee to all of us that in heaven we will not face judgment…we will receive our full inheritance…and it is all…

“…by Grace through Faith…

it is the FREE GIFT of God

and not by our works…”

And that is why I believe that my salvation is eternally secure…and so it yours. Please stop allowing the devil to keep you in fear and shame because of your sexual sin. Confront his lies with God’s truth and walk filled with the Spirit today with the Shield of Faith extinguishing all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
