The “I Am the Exception” Lie – (BCday #28) ~ blog

I think we all have an amazing ability to think that certain things do not apply to us. Gravity is not one of them unless you are riding with Jeff Bezos in his rocket ship which just lifted off. Things like smoking cigarettes or using chewing tobacco have a proven record of causing cancer. Overconsumption of alcohol can make you an alcoholic and porn… especially porn…is highly addictive and extremely powerful to keep you addicted.

Part of the problem is even though you might have scientists and researchers who are professionals and highly trained and educated, we have this thought that these things might happen to others, but I will be an exception to the rule.

We do not have to look any further for this interesting reality than those who are refusing to get the vaccine for Covid-19 or wear a mask. There have always been anti-vaccination people and I respect their right to make that choice. However, when 97% of people today entering hospitals for Covid-19…at this very time…are not vaccinated that is a very powerful statistic. So, are over 609,000 deaths in the USA with 34,100,000 cases and 4,100,000 million deaths worldwide.

We can argue about this till the cows come home…whenever that is but there is one true statistic that we should all be able to agree on because it is straight from the Bible.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God.”

If we can agree on that then here is another one that is straight from Scripture and is today’s passage in the 180 Boot Camp.

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

So, we should all be able to agree that we are all sinners and we all will be facing temptation for the rest of our lives. Therefore, let me ask you this question…

What will repeated sin cause to happen in your life?

The goal of all sin is to cause death to happen in your life. It may not cause death quickly but when it comes to sexual sin many things can die before you die. Your marriage can die. Your relationships with your children can die. Your job can die. And your reputation can die, and you feel as if you have become a leper and dive deeper into isolation.

How can I be so sure about this??? I read it in James 1:14-15…

“But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”

I do not care how much you feel you are the exception to the rule and that you are lucky or more fortunate to not experience consequences than others. This promise will be fulfilled for all who continue to travel down the road into porn and sexual sin.

Now you might be thinking…”What about me, John Doyel.” My marriage has not died…though it was deeply wounded, has left a huge scar, and it will have a continuing impact on our marriage till death do we part. My family has survived though not without a tremendous amount of work and them seeing me change and their mom and dad still together…all because of what they saw their mother do.

James used the analogy of the birth and life and death in our physical life to be the same pattern that follows the impact of sin in our lives. From our sinful desires is born the decision to sin. It starts with a thought, a glimpse, an image, or an idea. It is like a sperm fertilizing an egg and life is created…a fertilized idea setting you up for the fall. This conceived idea eventually is born into real action.

Then these actions mature. They become a regular part of your life wanting increased frequency and increased variety. While all along the way the pornographers know who you are and what your past has been so they can predict with incredible accuracy where you will most likely want to go next…deeper and darker into sexual sin. Thank you algorithms! And when this has become a habit…an addiction…it gives birth to death.

So, just so you know the truth…this secret sin of porn and sexual sin will mature and will eventually kill you. That is sins goal for everything in your life…to be destroyed, to be killed, to bring forth death.

Listen, my friends…I know that is not what you want. But you need to stop playing games with yourself thinking you are the exception to the rule…you are NOT!!! And neither am I. Now, the good news is that God can redeem us. His Holy Spirit has been placed in our bodies and by Him what is impossible for us is always possible with God.

And it is His will for us to become more holy. So, you might ask yourself why that has not happened in your life. Why has God not rescued me from sexual sin and addiction?

The answer to that is very clear, to me, and needs to become clear to you. You need to come out of isolation where you are very easily being defeated…because you remain isolated. You think you will be the exception…that is a lie. The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy and you are one of his many targets. He lusts for your death.

The solution is learning that living out the Christian life was never meant to be a solo sport.
