Rooted, Built Up, and Established in Christ (BCday#32) ~ blog

How would you describe your relationship with God based on where you are right now? Are things going well for you and you are growing stronger in purity or are you still returning to consume more of your own vomit?

With 60% of all Christian men saying they are addicted to porn and 30% of all Christian women saying they struggle with porn as well…some brave soul might bring a bowl of vomit to the church potluck and see who is eating it.

Wow…that is a gross thought. And yet having been born again as a Christian and follower of Christ who has become addicted to porn is also a terrible thought. God has done all that He needed to do to make sure we have everything we need to live a life of godliness. Like becoming a man and dying for our sins. Like sealing us with the Holy Spirit so that He can enable us to walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the desires of our flesh. And like making us part of a community of other believers who are helping one another bear one’s burdens.

One would think that surely everyone in church is living a life that is solidly connected with the Lord and is experiencing a good and strong Christian life. But one would be wrong and being wrong in this idea is what pervades churches with everyone pretending everything is just fine and we are all doing well.

Paul gives us a glimpse of what things could be like for us when writing to the Colossians…

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”

This image of a strong Christian can be seen as there is a solid connection between Christians and Christ. One is seen walking in Him…or along with Him…or walking in the Spirit as we are told in Galatians 5:16. Not only walking in His presence every day but with a solid connection with Him.

Next, Paul says we are to be Being Rooted and Established in our faith.

These verbs of being rooted and established or built up in Him are in the passive voice which means this is a work that God has done already in us. He has planted us into the body of Christ and secured us with deep roots. And because there are these deep roots we can be established in our faith.

However, Paul knew that his readers were struggling because of what they were hearing from those around them.

“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”

His readers were being confused and taken captive by the philosophy and empty deceit of human traditions. These things have the appearance of wisdom but are deceptions that at their core are empty. They are things of human tradition and apparent wisdom but are not truths according to Christ.

Now pay attention to this next sentence because it is truly profound. Paul writes…

“For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.”

Instead of us looking for truth and life coming from the world we live in…we need to be wary about the philosophies of our world. They sound reasonable but, in the end, they are deceitful and often lead to a conclusion that is just empty conceit. Even human traditions are according to the elemental spirits of the world.

Paul is telling them to leave elementary school and start working on their Master’s Degree… getting to know more deeply our Master. Because it is in Christ that all the fullness of deity resides so the more we grow in our knowledge of Him the more firmly and established we will become in our faith. But there is one more shocking thing Paul writes…

He says we have been filled in Him.

One thing I know for sure from my own experience and from the experiences of hundreds of other men. We often feel empty. We are lonely and empty and longing for something to fill the void we feel inside. And since porn does such a great job in causing us to feel fullness because we are being told we are wanted by an image or a video…that emptiness and loneliness vanish while we leave reality and drop into fantasy land.

But it never fills you to any point of satisfaction…does it? It medicates us for a brief time, but we find ourselves needing another fix more frequently and with some more variety. We want more and the pornographers who are playing you like a puppet in a string are only happy to lead you into deeper and darker sexual brokenness.

We can have the opposite. We can be filled and experience community. Being filled with the Spirit, allowing Him to guide us through our day is a good start. Knowing you are connected to a team of other men who are helping you is also essential.

So…if you want freedom, you will find it by increasing your knowledge of Christ and walking in community with other Christian men who know how to help one another.
