Are You Running on Empty or Full? ~ blog

When was the last time you ran out of gas? It has happened to me maybe 5 times in my life. Almost all of them were when I was younger, and dumber, trying to stretch it out as far as I could. With today’s cars the light comes on and you still have about 50 miles left. That was a good idea someone had.

How about in your Christian life? Are you running on empty, pushing yourself in every other area in your life but not feeding yourself spiritually and ignoring your personal relationship with Jesus and the Spirit? When that happens, you do not usually just pull off the road and wait for someone to show up to help you. You pull into the nearest adult bookstore which is only a matter of moments away because you can pull out your smartphone and look at porn.

The amazing thing about porn is it helps us feel better almost immediately. Sexual images cause a surge of testosterone which gives you energy. You go from being bored and feeling alone to feeling wide awake and imagining that the person in the image or video thinks you are the best man in the world, which of course is a lie. Your feelings of delight and pleasure build as more dopamine and oxytocin floods your brain until the orgasm hits and that is certainly a powerful and pleasurable feeling.

However, it always leaves you feeling worse than before. You are still empty and lonely and back to boredom. A little more shame. A little more guilt. With a lot of bad thoughts about yourself which only makes you want to do it all over again.

May I suggest to you that you read and memorize Ephesians 3:16-19…

“I pray that out of his glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

We need to be praying daily that God, out of His glorious riches would strengthen us by the Spirit with power in our inner being. That the Spirit would make us stronger in our ability to say no to sexual sin. However, it says much more than just saying no to sin. It talks about us literally becoming stronger in our inner being by knowing how much Christ loves us.

His love for you is eternally wide, long, high, and deep.

In other words, you can never escape the love of Jesus. No matter how far you fall or how far you flee you are still going to be surrounded by the love of Christ. Then we read that as we come to know the infinite love of Jesus, we can be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

That hole that you feel in your soul when you are worried, alone, stressed out, and bored is an emptiness that only the love of Christ can adequately fill. And notice what the verse says … you can be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. It does not say we are to fill ourselves up because everything we have thrown into that hole just falls out the bottom and the void is still there.

The verb “be filled” is passive in the Greek. That means that we are passive in this action or we cannot do it by ourselves. It is being done to us by God. He is the “filler” and we are the “fillee.” Like a balloon. I have never seen a balloon that can blow itself up. It does not have the capacity to do so. It is only God that can fill us up so that we are not being driven by our emptiness to things that are worthless but being filled by Him as the Spirit is strengthening us in our inner being to more fully grasp the love of Christ for us.

Every day you launch into your day because you have so much to do and neglect your time to fill ‘er up with the Lord…you will eventually be running on fumes and turning to sin.

Take the time as you end your day to commune with the Lord in prayer and reflection on His goodness to you each day. Then start the next day offering yourself as a living sacrifice, being filled with the Spirit, and putting on the full armor of God. Ask the Spirit to empower you in your inner being to know and feel the love of Jesus all day long!
