Listen…there is no way to soften this or to make this easy. To live a Christ-like life in this world of ours is growing more and more challenging. It is not an easy thing to do. Even Jesus told His disciples this while He was with them.
“Behold, an hour is coming, and has already come, for you to be scattered, each to his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. These things I have spoken to you so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
Plus, in Matthew 24 Jesus said…
“Then they will hand you over to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. And at that time many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another.”
Jesus also told us that the devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Some of you live in places where you are being openly persecuted for your Christianity. Yet for those of us in North America and Europe, we do not see this happening…at least not in public.
And yet, on this day…September 11th we remember how much some people hate the freedom and abundance we have showing their contempt of us in many ways…the most memorable bring the death of 2,996 people who died 20 years ago today. With another 10,000 first responders and those in the World Trade Center area developing cancer.
I know…I know these emails are supposed to be encouraging to you and this is anything but that. So why am I doing this??? Because I believe the vast majority of Christians have a grave misconception of what being a Christian is all about. Many who have grown up in a culture where Christianity has prospered and has been allowed to spread without persecution, it has easy living what I will call an EASY Christian life.
Our culture has been very receptive to Christianity and many of our founding fathers were Christians looking for a place where they could experience the freedom of religion and the separation of Church and State.
Part of having the abundance and freedom that we have is it has made being a Christian easy yet very diluted. We are not “following Christ” as the first disciples had to do…leaving behind everything and being with His 24/7 for three and a half years. He was crucified and His followers began to be persecuted soon thereafter.
Their Christianity was a life-or-death reality and for many in the world today it is still that way. Just google Christian Persecution Today and have your eyes opened. And because we have enough affluence to be able to provide for ourselves and our families the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness has become our main focus. Following Jesus has been minimized to attending a church on occasion, perhaps being in a small group, and having our kids involved in the Children or Youth ministry.
The lack of difficulties and persecution has led us to make other things in life more important than “following Jesus” on a daily basis. There is no “take up your cross and follow Me!” We have all the food, clothing, money, and affluence we think we need. Those things have grown strong while our Christian core is weak.
And in the absence of making the following Jesus a daily priority and spending quality time both in the morning and the evening, we have become spiritually weak. Is it any wonder that because of our spiritual weakness we have learned to turn to porn and sex to escape the problems of our lives?
Sure, porn has become omnipresent. We have easy access for free almost anywhere and at almost any time to this fix that fixes nothing. We seek help from small groups, counselors, books, tapes, seminars, and perhaps have a short reprieve…but only to find ourselves going back for more garbage for the mind and guilt for the soul. Progressing in self-destructive and highly addictive behavior that in the end will destroy your marriage, blow up your family, and perhaps cost you your job.
There are serious consequences of continuing down this path of sexual exhilaration ending only in the destruction of everything you cherish and hold dear.
And after 5842 days of working on my own recovery, I have learned this invaluable truth.
If I want freedom from porn and sex…
I am going to have to do the work necessary to escape.
Sure…everyone wants a quick and easy fix. Well, if that has not happened yet while you fumble around in a double-minded state…then maybe what you are doing is not enough. And if it is not enough you are moving further down the road of destruction where there are millions of Christian men still hoping for the best but experiencing the worst.
So, there is no easy way to say this, and you might begin to look for a quick fix elsewhere …even though it does not exist.
