In Luke 11 the disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray. I am sure all of them knew about prayer and practiced it as part of their Jewish faith. But there was something they noticed about Jesus and that was that He prayed a lot. Often alone and early in the morning He would go away and spend time with the Father in prayer.
Have you ever thought about prayer being a very important of your recovery? I am not talking about the prayers we make when we have fallen and confessing our sexual sins. I believe that is important and we should confess our sins to the Father as well as confess our sins to our brothers in Christ, or sisters in Christ is you are a woman. James says …
“Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”
When I was in my first year of recovery I did a lot of thinking about prayer and especially prayers that would make a difference in my life. Not begging for forgiveness prayers because I believe the Scriptures teach that all my sins, ALL of THEM, have been forgiven through the finished work of Christ on the cross. But, prayers that the bible tells me I should be praying. Daily prayers that underscore my desire to walk in purity and experience the transformation that the Spirit wants to do in me.
So, I developed that list of seven prayers that I began to pray daily. Literally, I was praying Scripture right back to God. The Apostle John in 1 John 5 tells us that if we ask for something that we know to be God’s will, then we can have the assurance that we will receive what we ask for. So why not pray exactly what the Bible tells me I should be asking for?
Then I thought, “What are the things God really wants me to do?” and from that I developed a guide that I call Prayers for Purity. I am sure the list could be much longer but here are the 7 prayers that I wrote about and practice.
